Trinamic’s TMCM-0013-xA current sense board

Current-Sense Boards Simplify Measurement of Motor-Control Currents

Each version of Trinamic’s TMCM-0013-xA has a maximum measurement range of 19.2 A.

Trinamic Motion Control's TMCM-0013-xA current-sense boards are lab tools designed to simplify the measurement and visualization of two-phase motor currents. The boards are well-suited for tuning a setup. The company says they offer a cost-effective way for developers to measure currents, tune the chopper, keep an eye on the current, or calibrate a setup.

"Over the years, the drop-in prices for electronic components has contributed to more and more mass-produced applications, and stimulated startups and maker movements around the world," says Michael Randt, CEO of Trinamic. "The TMCM-0013 current-sense board supports both professional and hobbyist developers by giving them access to plug-and-play components, and the tools needed to test and tune their setups."

Offered in 2-, 3-, and 6-A versions, the current-sense board can be connected to a scope via SMA-2-BNC cables, or standard probe clamps and placed in between the motor driver and motor. Two phases are measured using galvanically isolated current transducers, characterized by a high linear range and bandwidth. The board can be powered via a USB-C or 7- to 35-V power supply.

While each version of the TMCM-0013-xA has a maximum measurement range of 19.2 A, the difference is in the linear range. The TMCM-0013-2A motor phase-current measurement board has a 2-A linear range; the TMCM-0013-3A has a 3-A linear range; and the TMCM-0013-6A has a 6-A linear range.

Suited for small electric motors such as stepper motors, brushless dc (BLDC) motors, or dc motors, the boards can be connected to typical lab oscilloscopes, replacing expensive current probes. When measuring the current of BLDC motors, the third phase current can be defined mathematically with the oscilloscope. In addition to measuring motor currents, the TMCM-0013-xA is also suited for other current measurements, including supply current.

The TMCM-0013-xA is expected to be available from mid-October 2019.
