40-V, 2.5-A µModule Regulator Comes in 6.25- x 6.25-mm BGA

Analog Devices' step-down dc-dc µModule regulator includes a switching regulator controller, power switches, and inductor.

Analog Devices’ Power by Linear LTM8002 is a step-down dc-dc µModule (power module) regulator with a 40-V input voltage rating (42 V abs max) and 2.5 A of continuous (3.5 A peak) output current, housed in a 6.25- × 6.25- × 2.22-mm BGA package. The LTM8002 includes a switching regulator controller, power switches, inductor, and other supporting components.

The LTM8002's pinout is FMEA (failure mode effects analysis) compliant. Therefore, in the event of short-circuit to GND, short-circuit to a neighboring pin, or if the pin is left floating, the output voltage safely stays at or below the regulated voltage, says the company. The maximum junction temperature of the H grade is 150°C and I grade is 125°C. The LTM8002 H grade can deliver 2.8 A of output current up to 105°C ambient without a heat sink or airflow under the 12 VIN to 5 VOUT condition.

The switching frequency is adjustable with a resistor or can be synchronized to an external clock from 200 kHz to 3 MHz to avoid interference by operating the device in or out of a system's specific frequency or frequency range. The LTM8002 has four modes: burst mode operation, pulse-skipping mode, pulse-skipping mode with spread spectrum mode, and external synchronization mode.

The output voltage is adjustable with one resistor from 0.97 to 18 V or fixed at 3.3 V. This wide output voltage range provides the versatility of using one product to generate common system bus voltages of 3.3, 5, 12, and 15 V.

The LTM8002 is operational from −40°C to 150°C.
