High-Performance Buck Regulators Target High Voltage Applications
Semtech announced the extension of its high voltage power management platform with the new TS3004x family of integrated switching buck regulators. The new product family is geared toward high-performance applications requiring up to 40-volt input range in a wide range of markets such as industrial, telecommunications and consumer.
The TS3004x product family is comprised of the TS30041 and the TS30042 DC/DC synchronous switching regulators. The products include integrated power switches and robust fault protection features for small footprint and advanced power management in high voltage applications. Applications for the TS3004x product family include industrial and telecommunications power supplies, factory automation, automotive, and other industrial applications.
38V Input Synchronous Boost Controller Operates at 150°C
Linear Technology announced the H-grade versions of the LTC3786, a synchronous step-up DC/DC controller with guaranteed operation for junction temperatures up to 150°C. The LTC3786 replaces the boost diode with an N-channel MOSFET for higher efficiency and reduced power loss. This controller can produce 24V at 5A output from a 12V input with up to 98% efficiency, ideal for automotive, industrial, and medical applications.
The LTC3786 operates from an input voltage ranging from 4.5V to 38V during start-up, maintains operation down to 2.5V after start-up and can regulate an output voltage as high as 60V. Its low 55µA quiescent current helps extend the run time in battery powered applications when in standby mode.
The powerful 1.2W onboard N-channel MOSFET gate drivers are capable of slewing large MOSFET gates quickly, minimizing transition losses and allowing for up to a 10A output current. It has adjustable cycle-by-cycle current limit protection and uses either a sense resistor or monitors the voltage drop across the inductor (DCR) for current sensing.
600V Intelligent Power Module
ON Semiconductor has launched new intelligent power modules for industrial power management and motor control applications. The company's new STK57FU394AG-E (15A) and STK5MFU3C1A-E (30A) are advanced 600 V IPMs that integrate a power factor correction (PFC) converter, three-phase inverter output stage, pre-drive circuitry and protection in a single, compact package.
High levels of integration help to reduce part count and board space compared to discrete designs in applications that include motor control, inverter control and HVAC systems. Microcontroller-compatible low-voltage input and status outputs support further component and space reduction by eliminating the need for optotocouplers between a host micro and the IPM.
The devices feature built-in cross conduction prevention, which reduces the possibility of system malfunctions caused by noise, and over-current protection for both the inverter and PFC section. Under-voltage lock-out ensures IGBT gate shutdown in the event of abnormal conditions. The devices are certified to UL1557 and offer an externally accessible embedded thermistor for high-precision monitoring of the temperature of the insulated metal substrate.
Constant Current DC-DC LED Driver with Low Standby Power Mode
Diodes Incorporated has introduced the AL8860 hysteresis mode DC-DC step-down converter, which is designed for driving single or multiple series connected LEDs efficiently from a voltage source higher than the LED voltage. With an integrated MOSFET, it provides a low BOM cost solution for low-voltage industrial and automotive LED lighting applications.
Operating from an input supply between 4.5V and 40V, the AL8860 can directly source a 1A output current in the TSOT25 package, or up to 1.5A in the more thermally efficient MSOP8-EP package. Contingent on the supply voltage and other external components, the AL8860 is capable of providing up to 40 watts of output power.
Constant-Current PWM Dimmable Buck Regulator LED Driver
Allegro MicroSystems introduced a new automotive, AEC-Q100 qualified single IC switching regulator that provides constant-current output to drive high-power LEDs. Allegro's A6217 integrates a high-side N-channel DMOS switch for DC-to-DC step- down (buck) conversion. A true average current is output using a cycle-by-cycle, controlled on-time method. The LED driver is targeted at the automotive lighting applications like daytime running lights, front and rear fog lights,and turn-stop lights.
Output current is user-selectable by an external current sense resistor. Output voltage is automatically adjusted to drive various numbers of LEDs in a single string, ensuring optimal system efficiency. LED dimming can be accomplished by logic-level or "chopped battery" PWM, as well as Analog dimming capability. The A6217 also features switching frequency dithering for reduced EMI signature.
Voltage Detector Meets AEC-Q100 Automotive Grade 1
Torex Semiconductor introduced the XD6130/XD6131 series of voltage detectors with watchdog function. The watchdog timeout time and release delay time can be set as desired using a single external capacitor. These voltage detectors are used for microprocessor monitoring and when the power voltage reaches the detect voltage, or a Low to High pulse is not input to the watchdog pin within the watchdog timeout time, an L level signal is output from the RESETB pin.
Available in a small SOT26 package, the XD6130 includes Manual RESET function, whereas the XD6131 allows the user to turn off the Watch Dog Timer via the EN pin. With an operating temperature range of -40 to +125°C and AEC-Q100 Grade 1 rating, these IC are ideally suited for automotive ECU applications.
Low Voltage Bidirectional Protector
Bourns announced it has expanded its leading line of bidirectional overvoltage protectors offering very low breakover voltage. Designed to limit damaging overvoltage threats, Bourns latest thyristor surge device provides optimized 2-point protection for transformer windings, low voltage electronics and digital telecommunication lines.
The BournsR Model TISP4011H1BJ features very low V(bo) breakover voltage of 10.5V, which allows designers to protect lines of working voltages up to 5.25V. Delivering excellent protection for electrical overstress conditions, it provides low voltage overshoot and low capacitance. These overvoltage protectors are symmetrical voltage-triggered bidirectional thyristors housed in a SMB package.
Smart Power Stages Increase Accuracy While Simplifying Designs
Vishay Intertechnology introduced two new 60 A VRPower smart power stages with integrated current and temperature monitors for multi-phase DC/DC systems. Combining power MOSFETs, an advanced driver IC, and a bootstrap FET in a QFN package, the Vishay Siliconix SiC645 and SiC645A simplify designs and deliver higher accuracy than comparable standard DrMOS products while offering a 16 % smaller footprint than similar competing devices.
Unlike solutions that monitor power consumption using inductor DCR sensing — a technique with lower accuracy that requires external components such as a thermistor for temperature compensation — the SiC645 and SiC645A utilize low-side MOSFET RDS(ON) sensing to accurately report current and temperature using 5 mV/A and 8 mV/C signals, respectively. This method of current sensing is accurate over a wide load range and is internally temperature-compensated,
