The tight static error band and the strict transient response requirements mandate a dc-dc converter with robust, time domain reaction to processor state changes. This article describes the SC2422 that operates in the input current mode, with cycle by cycle current sharing, providing an optimal solution while reducing the cost of output capacitors and practically eliminating the need for Oscon capacitors. There are several issues governing the response of the dc-dc converter to processor power demands.

This article presents a loss-less current sensor scheme that can be shared among the phases of a multiphase synchronous buck converter. This article also analyzes the sensing technique in terms of temperature, frequency, current level, and component tolerances.

    Line Frequency, Low-Cost Lead-Acid Battery Charger by Paul Chinski of Charles Industries describes the design of a lead-acid battery charger intended for cost-sensitive applications.

    This article describes the design of a lead-acid battery charger intended for cost-sensitive applications. The design implements a power MOSFET switch as the element that produces phase controlled charging current. This allows use of voltage sensing and a voltage loop and current loop control. Instead of an SMPS, the charger operates from the ac line via a transformer.
