Starting Up a 12-V Motor-Control Kit

Infineon has a number of evaluation kits designed to streamline motor-control development, including its 12-V Motor Control Kit (Fig. 1), which I had a chance to check out (see video above). It's built around a MOTIX TLE9879 microcontroller designed for three-phase motor-control applications. 

The microcontroller is based on an Arm Cortex-M3. The chip integrates NFET drivers that can drive a three-phase motor or it can control external NFETs. The system includes a charge pump that allows for low-voltage operation. 

Also included in the system is LIN support with LIN 2.2- and SAEJ2602-compatible drivers on-chip. There's a 32-kB boot ROM, 128 kB of flash storage, and 6 kB of RAM. Operating voltage ranges from 5.5 to 28 V with a maximum rating of 40 V. The ESD input performance is up to 3 kV for all pins, 4 kV for the high-voltage pins, and 5 kV for the LIN pin. It's designed to operate from 40 to 150°C.

The kit and microcontroller are supported by a range of software tools and debugging hardware (Fig. 2).
