Multiphase Controller IC for AMD Processors
International Rectifier (IR) introduced the IR3082 Multiphase Control IC for AMD Opteron and Athlon64 processor-powered servers and workstations. The IR3082 broadens IR's XPhase family of scalable multiphase ICs and, together with DirectFET power MOSFETs, delivers a multiphase dc-dc power solution for mid-range and high-end servers, voltage regulator modules and high-current telecom applications.
Features of the IR3082 include a 5-bit VID with 1% overall system accuracy. An adaptive voltage-positioning feature maintains the output voltage tolerance while minimizing output capacitor requirements. A patented body-braking circuit can reduce the output capacitance requirement by 25%, further reducing system costs.
The IR3082 XPhase Control IC is packaged in a thermally enhanced 5-mm × 5-mm, 20-lead MLPQ package. The cost is $1.49 each for 10,000-piece quantities.

Digital Signal Controllers
Texas Instruments (TI) has announced sampling of the TMS320F2801, TMS320-F2806 and TMS320F2808 digital signal controllers. Volume production for all three devices is scheduled for the third quarter of 2005. Combining the real-time performance of TI's digital signal processors (DSPs) with the peripheral integration, C-language efficiency and ease of use of a microcontroller (MCU), the new TMS320 F28x devices are optimized for motor control, digital power conversion and intelligent sensor control.
A mix of peripherals, including a patent-pending pulse-width modulator with high resolution, reduces external component count to provide a complete embedded control system with 100 MIPS of 32-bit DSP performance for less than $5 in volume. Sampling now, the TMS320F2801 controller is $4.95, the TMS320F2806 is $7.45 and the TMS320F2808 is $9.95, all in production quantities.
Buck-boost DC-DC Controller
Linear Technology introduces the LTC3780, a high-performance buck-boost switching regulator controller that operates from input voltages above, below or equal to the output voltage. The LTC3780 operates using a single inductor and can deliver output power as high as 75 W; a 4-switch synchronous rectification delivers efficiencies up to 97%. The constant frequency current mode architecture allows a phase-lockable frequency of up to 400 kHz.
With a wide 4-V to 30-V (36-V max) input and 0.8-V to 30-V output range and seamless transitions between operating modes, the LTC3780 is ideal for automotive, telecom and battery-powered systems. The device is offered in 24-lead SSOP and 5-mm × 5-mm QFN packages. Pricing starts at $4.65 for 1000 pieces.
Half-bridge Gate Drivers
Fairchild offers two new half-bridge gate driver ICs: the FAN7380 and the FAN7382. The components use an innovative common-mode dV/dt noise canceling circuit that provides high noise immunity.
They deliver an advanced-level shift circuit permitting industry-leading, high-side driver operation with negative VS swings of up to -9 V (at VBS=15 V). These devices feature low quiescent currents, resulting in extremely low-power consumption.
Components are available in SOIC packages and cost $0.70 for the FAN7380 and $1 for the FAN7382 for 1000 pieces.

Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions' (TAOS) TSL2650 and TSL2561 light-to-digital converters perform ambient light sensing for portable and other applications. These sensors enable display panel or keyboard backlighting to be controlled automatically to minimize power consumption — and extend battery life — under different ambient lighting conditions.
These chips measure light levels ranging from 0.1 lux to 40,000 lux, delivering 16-bit resolution without expensive filtering.
In addition, they offer either an SMBus (the 2650 model) or I2C (the 2561 model) interface and come in 6-pin chipscale or transfer molded board packages. Pricing is $1.29 each in lots of 1000.
Multifunction Charge Pump
Advanced Analogic Technologies introduced its first multifunction charge pump device, the AAT2801.
This high-efficiency charge pump supports both white LED backlight and white LED camera-flash applications for portable systems powered by Li-ion/polymer batteries.
Driving up to four LEDs and delivering up to 30 mA on each current source output, the AAT2801 offers space savings to OEMs building mobile phones, smart phones and PDAs. To maximize power efficiency, the charge pump operates in 1x, 1.5x and 2x modes.
Specified over the -40°C to 85°C temperature range, the AAT2801 is available in a lead-free, 16-pin TDFN44 package. The device costs $1.82 each for 1000-unit quantities.
Wall Industries has released the PSSBU150 series of 150-W universal-input, ac-dc open pc-board power supplies. These power supplies provide a single output voltage ranging from 3 V to 50 V. The PSSBU150 series is housed in a 3-in. × 5-in. × 1.32-in. package.
Weighing approximately 12 oz, the PSSBU150 series features an internal EMI filter, power factor correction, an operating temperature up to +70°C, efficiencies as high as 86%, tight line/load regulation, overvoltage and over-current protection.
The PSSBU150 series is priced at $33 in OEM quantities.
Low VF Schottky Diode
Central Semiconductor has released its CMDSH05-4 energy-efficient high-current/low VF Schottky diode in a SUPERmini SOD-323 package. This device offers a high continuous forward current of 500 mA and a low maximum VF specification of 0.35 V at 100 mA and 0.47 V at 500 mA. The CMDSH05-4 is ideal for motor control and dc-dc applications in portable battery-powered electronics.
Central Semiconductor's EED Schottky diodes typically have a forward voltage drop of at least 50% less than nonEED diodes. The SOD-323 surface mount package offers a nominal profile under 1 mm and utilizes 49% less circuit board space compared to an SOD-123.
The CMDSH05-4 costs $0.14 each in quantities of 3000.

STMicroelectronics has introduced a series of PowerMESH IGBTs optimized for use in home appliance motor control, power factor correction and induction heating applications. The V series IGBTs — STGP20NC60V and STG W20NC60V — use a patented strip layout associated with a new carrier lifetime control. This improves the collector-emitter saturation voltage in the devices and also reduces switching losses. Moreover, the new design makes the IGBTs suitable for operation up to 50 kHz.
The STGP20NC60V and STGW20NC60V are both 30-A, 600-V n-channel devices, available in a TO-220 or TO-247 package, respectively. The parts offer optimized CRSS/CRSS ratio in order to avoid cross-conduction phenomena and low gate charge. Their switching losses include the tail current and the diode recovery energy.
Prices range from $1.25 to $4.50 in quantities of 10,000 pieces.
HiTek Power has introduced the PH220, a versatile new series of 200-W high-voltage power supplies that are housed in a standard 3U-high chassis and rack mountable. The line-operated power supplies feature a semi-linear sine-wave topology, so they exhibit very low noise and high-precision output characteristics, enabling deployment in applications such as MRI scanners.
The PH220 series' first production model is rated for an output voltage of -1500 V, with a broad range of output voltages from 100 V to higher than 5000 V possible. Either positive or negative output polarity can be factory selected.
The power supplies boast full analog remote control capabilities — including voltage and current mode programming, enable input and monitor outputs — with better than 0.01% line, load, stability and noise performance.

Low-noise DC-DC Converter
The MAX8727, a boost converter that provides the high-voltage analog supply for dot inversion active matrix LCD (AMLCD) supplies, is now available from Maxim Integrated Products. High-performance current mode, fixed frequency and pulse-width-modulation circuitry with built-in n-channel MOSFET provides an efficient regulator with fast response. High-switching frequency allows easy filtering and faster loop performance. An external compensation pin provides flexibility in determining loop dynamics. As a result, designers can use small, low-ESR ceramic capacitors. Soft-start is programmed with an external capacitor, which sets the input-current ramp rate.
The MAX8727 is available in a space-saving 10-pin TDFN package and operates over a -40°C to 85°C. Prices start at $2.94 each in lots of 1000.

Multiphase Core Regulator
The ISL6260 from Intersil is a precision multiphase microprocessor core voltage regulator that can be programmed for one-, two- or three-channel operation to implement next-generation Intel Pentium M protocols. It offers efficiency at full and light load, and seamless integration with the entire Intersil multiphase controller lineup. It also delivers fast transient response through the use of Intersil's Robust Ripple Regulator (R3) technology, which enables variable switching frequency during load transients.
Additional features include microprocessor voltage identification input; the ability to support multiple current-sensing approaches; differential remote voltage sensing; overcurrent, overvoltage and undervoltage protection; noise immunity and transient response; high efficiency across the load range; and balanced channel loading including transients.

Low-voltage Trench MOSFETs
ON Semiconductor has introduced eight new N-channel and P-channel, low-voltage Trench MOSFETs. These devices feature low RDS(ON) to improve overall power-circuit efficiency in portable products when compared to similarly packaged competitive solutions.
The new devices are small-signal, 20-V MOSFETs specifically designed for use in -430 mA to -950 mA applications. Using ON Semiconductor's Trench technology, these new low-voltage MOSFETs boost channel length and equivalent channel density, which enables greater current conduction. The MOSFETs feature RDS(ON) values ranging from 150 mΩ to 900 mΩ.
Available in three tiny (1.6 mm × 1.6 mm), low-profile (0.6 mm to 1 mm) packages, these Trench MOSFETs conserve valuable board space. ON Semiconductor has integrated zener diodes into the gates of its Trench MOSFET to provide superior ESD protection.
The devices are priced between $0.10 and $0.12 per unit in 10,000-unit lots.
Precision Voltage Divider
IRC Advanced Film Division, a TT electronics company, has developed a military voltage divider that provides two matched resistors with precision absolute and ratio tolerances on a single chip.
The D1206 Series dividers are ideal for precision analog circuit designs for military and aerospace applications, especially gain control circuits in op amps and as a reference voltage for military power supplies.
The D1206 Series voltage divider is composed of two TaNFilm tantalum nitride resistors on ceramic substrate, packaged on a standard 1206-size chip, which has a lower profile and occupies less board space than conventional plastic-packaged networks.
The D1206 Series dividers feature a resistance range of 10 Ω to 200 kΩ. TCRs are ±25 ppm/°C absolute and ±5 ppm/°C tracking. Power dissipation is 250 mW and the operating temperature range is -55°C to 125°C.

Precision Voltage Divider
BI Technologies Electronic Component Division, a TT electronics company, has developed a precision voltage divider network suited for the aerospace, industrial, military and medical industries. Designated the SS1 Series, these divider networks consist of two ultra-stable Nichrome-thin film resistors on silicon substrate, connected in series. In a 3-leaded SOT-23 package, the two resistors are connected in series for an optimized voltage divider circuit. A three-resistor network is also available in a 4-leaded SOT-143 package.
The resistor networks are available in a wide range of resistance nominal and ratio values from 5 kΩ to 100 kΩ. Standard TCRs are ±25 ppm/°C with tracking tolerances between resistors better than ±5 ppm/°C.

The new models deliver 30 W of total power at 5 Vdc or 60 W at 12 V, 15 V, 24 V or 48 Vdc. These power supplies accept universal input of 127 Vdc to 300 Vdc or 90 Vdc to 264 Vdc. Featuring high-efficiency operation, the new devices offer overload, overvoltage, short circuit and thermal protection. They include built-in Class B EMI filtering along with a 2.5-mm ID barrel jack for the output and a convenient IEC ac 320 inlet that can accept input line cords with virtually any appropriate plug configuration. Stackpole Electronics' new MV series combines a low-voltage varistor and a capacitor into a single device that protects electronic equipment operating in a low-voltage region against voltage surges and high-frequency noise.
The MV series incorporates a varistor in the dc voltage range from 3 V to 125 V and a bypass capacitor operating in the capacitance range of 10 nF to 1000 nF. The MV series is rated from -40°C to 85°C and exhibits an excellent response time of less than 25 ns.
The varistors are square-shaped components with in-line leads and are available in 6 mm × 9 mm with straight or crimped leads. The MV Series is able to withstand a single-pulse surge current (Ip) of 150 A (8/20 µsec waveform) and demonstrate single-pulse energy absorption (Wmax) of 0.1 J to 2.5 J (10/1000 µsec waveform). Vishay Intertechnology has introduced two series of flat chip resistor arrays that integrate four thin film resistors into a single 0612 surface-mount package. The Vishay Beyschlag ACAC 0612 precision series and ACAC 0612 professional series resistor arrays are ideal for applications that demand high component densities and accurate and stable resistor performance. The ACAC 0612 precision series resistor arrays feature absolute TCR of ±25 ppm/°K and tracking TCR of ±15 ppm/°K, with tracking TCR of ±10 ppm/°K available on request. The ACAC 0612 professional series resistor arrays feature absolute TCR of ±50 ppm/°K, with ±25 ppm/°K available on request. The ACAC 0612 precision series arrays have absolute tolerance of ±0.25% and matched tolerance of 0.1%, while the ACAC 0612 professional series arrays have absolute tolerance of ±1%.

Fully Regulated Bus Converter
Power-One has announced the 32-A HKS48T30120 IBA bus converter. This 12-Vdc output half-brick combines full regulation with efficiencies up to 94.5%, making it an ideal dc-dc front end to provide power to intermediate bus architecture point-of-load converters. The converter provides 21.5 A at 70°C.
The HKS48T30120 operates over a wide input range, from 35 Vdc to 75 Vdc, and provides output backdrive and pre-bias voltage capabilities, 2121 Vdc input-to-output isolation and basic safety insulation rating. Interface capabilities include remote on/off, remote sense and output trim.

Raychem Circuit Protection, a business unit of Tyco Electronics, has announced that its new PolySwitch TRF600-150 circuit protection devices are now UL recognized to UL 1434 and have passed UL tests from UL 497A. The PolySwitch devices meet the UL specification for “Secondary Protectors for Communication Circuits” for telecom and networking applications and help provide resettable overcurrent protection in electronic equipment that must comply with UL 60950 and TIA-968-A standards. The recognition of these parts by UL permits integration of the device without additional module or equipment testing.
The compact physical dimensions of the Poly-Switch TRF600-150 device facilitate development of more densely populated PCB designs and permit drop-in replacement for many existing designs. In addition, the device is compliant with the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC.

Eighth-brick Bus Converters
Artesyn Technologies has launched an eighth-brick intermediate bus converter (IBC) with a 300-W output capability. The new IBC25A fixed-ratio dc transformer model generates an isolated, unregulated 12 V/25 A output with a full load efficiency of 96%. It has a power density in excess of 362 W/in3. In addition, the company is introducing two eighth-brick IBCs with semiregulated outputs, featuring input voltage ranges optimized for telecom and computing applications.
The fixed ratio model has an input range of 42 Vdc to 53 Vdc, generates an isolated, unregulated 12-V output, and is capable of delivering up to 25 A.
The semi-regulated eighth-brick IBCs are available with a wide industry-standard 36-Vdc to 75-Vdc input for telecom applications and with a narrower 48-Vdc ±10% input for datacom applications. Both models generate an isolated 12-Vdc output; the wide-input version can deliver up to 17 A of output current, while the narrow-input version has a higher 20-A capability. The narrow-input semiregulated IBC has a setpoint accuracy of ±0.25%.

DC-to-AC Inverter for Four CCFL Tubes
The KLS-170A from Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.) is the latest addition to the company's expanding line of compact single-board dc-to-ac inverters for driving single-, dual- and quad-tube cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) in LCD backlighting applications. The KLS-170A provides an economical, high-performance solution for driving four LCD displays in medical and industrial equipment applications requiring super-bright, high-visibility displays in 0°C to 60°C environments. The module provides brightness control, on/off control features and 80% operational efficiency at the minimum.
