SMD Solid Tantalum Capacitor
THE THJ 200C SMD Series surface-mount solid tantalum capacitor from AVX delivers 1,000 hours of continuous operation at 200°C with derating. The tantalum capacitor is based on a unique design, distinct manufacturing processes and special aging techniques that enable high-temperature performance for harsh-environment applications such as oil and gas drilling, aerospace, defense and automotive.
The capacitors are available in two E-case sizes: a 220-µF version rated at 10 V for 3-V-rail applications, and a 100-µF rated at 16 V for 5-V-rail applications. The tantalum capacitors are housed in a small SMT package that lends itself to fast pick-and-place assembly techniques. A negative temperature coefficient ensures no localized heating occurs in the capacitor, thus avoiding thermal runaway and, ultimately, destruction or operational degradation of the device.
Gold-plated termination for hybrid assembly is provided, as conventional tin/tin-lead-finished terminations have melting points that are too low for reliable operation at 200°C. Long operating life is also a key attribute, as the capacitor features a leakage current of less than 1 mA after 1,000 hours of operation at 200°C. All THJ 200°C capacitors are designed to withstand a 3x-reflow soldering process at 260°C and are RoHS compatible.
In oil and gas applications, the tantalum capacitors can be used in dc-dc converters found in drilling heads that are subjected to rising ambient temperature with depth. Enabling companies to enhance the use of electronics at higher temperatures leads to higher profits, as deeper-situated commodities are more easily and cheaply accessed.
In these applications, the 16-V capacitor is suitable for ±5V analog circuits, while the 10-V capacitor iused for 2.5-V and 3.3-V digital circuits.

Wide-Input 28 V Micro DC-DC Converters
THE BRICK business unit of Vicor has added eight wide-input micro-dc-dc converters to its 28-Vdc-input family. These models have nominal output voltages ranging from 3.3 to 48 Vdc and a maximum power rating of 100 W (50 W at 3.3 and 5 Vout and 100 W at 12, 15, 24, 28, 36, and 48 Vout).
These dc-dc modules are suitable for either 12- or 24-V applications such as MIL-COTS or commercial battery systems in vehicles. They can also be used in a variety of vehicle or man-portable applications including lighting, communications, portable test equipment, display, and control systems.
With efficiencies ranging up to 81%, the converters operate from 28 V nominal input, with an input range of 9 to 36 V. These converters are available in four environmental grades (with operating temperatures as low as -55°C) with six pin options and three baseplate options.
These modules, which are available in RoHS-compliant models, measure 57.9 × 36.8 × 12.7 mm and have a wide trim range of 10% to 110% of nominal output voltage.

Ultralow-Power Boost Converter
THE LT8415 low-noise micropower boost converter from Linear Technology integrates dual half-bridge switches. The converter's unique design scheme requires only 10.5 µA quiescent current, which is further reduced to 0 µA in shutdown.
Integrated high-value (12.4-MΩ/0.4-MΩ) output feedback divider resistors enable the regulation of a 16-V output with less than 70 µA of total input current. A 25-mA current-limit switch enables efficient operation from high-impedance sources, such as coin-cell batteries, without any inrush current limitation.
The LT8415's integrated N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs in each half-bridge are synchronously controlled by a single input pin and never turn on at the same time, maximizing system reliability for applications such as MEMs relays. The internal MOSFETs are sized to drive capacitive loads ranging from a few pF to several nF without issue. The LT8415 integrates the main switch, half-bridge switches, Schottky diodes and output disconnect on a single die packaged in a 2- × 3-mm DFN.
The LT8415's wide 2.5-V to 16-V input-voltage range enables it to operate from single-cell Li-Ion batteries up to fixed 12-V-input rails, delivering outputs up to 40 V. The LT8415EDDB is available from stock in a 12-lead 2- × 3-mm DFN package. Pricing starts at $2.40 each for 1,000-piece quantities. An industrial temperature version, the LT8415IDDB is also available from stock in a 12-lead 2- × 3-mm DFN package priced at from $2.76 each for 1,000-piece quantities.
65-W Open-Frame Power Supplies
Phihong has developed the PSA065 and PSA065M series single-output, 65-W, open-frame power supplies for 1-U applications. Available in 12-, 24-, and 48-V-output models, the power supplies comply with the CE low-voltage directive and feature a 2- by 4-inch footprint.
The PSA065 Series power supplies have been designed for access devices and peripherals, as well as telecom, data-com, and industrial applications, while the PSA065M Series power supplies are suit medical equipment, gaming, and touch-screen display applications.
Both supplies operate at more than 80% efficiency at maximum load and are extremely reliable, offering a minimum of 250,000 hours MTBF in standard operating conditions. The power supplies can tolerate temperatures from 0°C to 50°C and humidity from 5 to 95%. The series also provides overvoltage and overcurrent protection with auto-restart.
Besides CE-compliance, PSA065 power supplies also meet cUL/UL 60950-1 and IEC 60950-1, while PSA065M power supplies meet cUL/UL 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1. The PSA065M also features a maximum leakage current of 100 µA.

Extended-Input DC-DC Converters and Filters
Incorporating the company's high-efficiency synchronous rectifier technology, the MQFL-28E series high-reliability dc-dc converters from SynQor are presented as the only wide-range-input devices developed specifically for the Mil/Aero industry. The MQFL-28E family handles up to 120 W while meeting the long-term overvoltage surges in the input voltage specified by MIL STD 704(A-F), RTCA/DO-160E, and DEF STAN 61-5. The converters accept continuous input voltages of 16 to 70 V while permitting broader transient input voltages of 16 to 80 V for 1 second.
The MQFL-28E series is available in 11 standard single-output voltages including 1.5, 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, 5, 6, 7.5, 9, 12, 15 and 28V. Dual-output converters are also available with output voltages of ±5 V, ±12 V and ±15 V with the capability of providing up to 80% power from either output.
These MilQor Hi-Rel MQFL-28E converters operate at efficiencies to 91% and are designed for temperatures from -55°C to 125°C with multiple screening options for stringent environmental requirements. The dc-dc converters are housed in the full-size (FL) industry-standard package using SynQor's innovative QorSeal™ packaging technology, which ensures survivability in harsh environments, long-term storage and provides the latest technology in tin-whisker mitigation.
Standard features include fixed switching frequency, parallel operation with current share, remote sensing, output trim adjust, clock synchronization, primary and secondary referenced enable, continuous short-circuit and overload protection, and input undervoltage lockout and input overvoltage shutdown. Complimentary MQME-28E EMI filter module solutions rated at 320 W (20A) are available which include transient suppression circuitry, enable pass-through circuitry, and reverse polarity protection.

Micro-HV Power Supplies
AN EXTENSION of the company's micro-sized high-voltage power supplies, the “V” Series and “M” Series devices offer low ripple, tight tolerances, self-restoring output voltage and voltage monitors, as well as protection against arc and continuous short circuits. The power supplies are especially suited for design engineers requiring bias voltage in applications such as avalanche photo diodes and photomultiplier tubes.

Pick and Place Terminal Blocks
BLOCKMASTER ELECTRONICS has introduced the STH Series terminal blocks, specifically engineered for new pick-and-place production technology using through-hole product placement. With a self-extinguishing halogen-free UL94 V-0 plastic housing that withstands up to 270°C, the terminal blocks suit reflow soldering techniques.
The STH blocks are offered in pitches of 3.81 mm to 15.0 mm in modular or side-stackable configurations with 2- to 6-pole individual units. Products in the line offer operating voltages from 300 V to 750 V at 10 to 125 A.

SMT DC Switching Regulator
V-INFINITY, a division of CUI Inc., offers the V78XX-500-SMT series, a surface mount version of its 0.5 A V78XX-500 dc switching regulator that provides efficiencies to 96% and is designed to be a high-performance alternative to linear regulators. Unlike linear regulators, the V78XX-500-SMT series does not require a heat sink, making it well-suited for applications where board space is at a premium and energy efficiency is a concern.
Measuring 15.24 × 8.50 × 7.00 mm, the V78XX-500-SMT series features a wide input range from 4.5 to 28 Vdc, and regulated output voltages of 3.3, 5, 12, and 15 Vdc are offered. Output current is 500 mA and operating temperature range is -40° to 71°C at 100% load, derating to 60% load at 85°C. Chemical-Resistant Power Connectors
PART OF the SB power connector line, the CR-SB chemical-resistant connectors from Anderson Power Products were developed for applications requiring resistance to environmental factors that commonly degrade standard products and lead to eventual failure. The connectors feature a housing material that improves resistance to hydrocarbons and solvents, and extends temperature range.
The power connectors are suitable for a wide range of applications in a variety of industries including automotive, industrial, and personal mobility. In addition, the housing offers the same features as the previous SB power connector products, including color and mechanical coding, hot-plug capability, and a genderless design.
The CR-SB power connectors are fully intermateable and interchangeable with standard SB connectors and accept the same range of contacts. Rated from 50 to 350 A at 600 V, the power connectors offer connection under load capability up to 100 A.

Anderson Power Products
240-W 1/8-Brick DC-DC Module
The BMR454 dc-dc converter from Ericsson Power Modules is rated to 240 W with a 95% efficiency at full load. The device is claimed to provide double the power of most conventional eighth-brick modules for similar applications.
The dc-dc converter provides a wide input voltage range of 36 V to 75 V, and a tightly regulated output. The BMR454 is also said to be the industry's first to include a PMBus.
The parameters of the BMR454 can be monitored via PMBus, and they can also be adjusted — tailored by the customer or Ericsson — to achieve an endless number of combinations. Exhibiting versatility, the module can be used as an intermediate bus converter (IBC) in front of a range of regulators, or as a traditional dc-dc module powering applications such hard drives, fans and other devices.
The company believes its most significant impact will be on 48-Vdc information and communication technology applications such as radio base stations, servers, and routers.
The modules can be used for improved system efficiency, as output voltage and other parameters can be adjusted online to improve efficiency at specified load conditions. Additionally, vital parameters such as input voltage, output voltage, output current and temperature can be monitored online.
The module's output voltage can be adjusted between 8.1 V and 13.2 V with a tight output tolerance of ±2%. Offering a power density figure of more than 18W/cm2 (117W/in.2), the BMR454 is pin-compatible with its big brother, the BMR453, making it possible for designers to upgrade to higher power when upgrading boards with new functionality. The BMR454 is priced at $37 in quantities of 10,000 pieces.
