Thermal Analysis Software

Version 5 of Flomerics' Web-based Flopack software provides the ability to create Delphi compact models that predict the performance of electronic components under soon-to-be-published thermal testing standards from JEDEC committee JC-15.1. Flopack produces behavioral compact models that predict the temperature of IC packages at critical points, such as the junction, case and board, in less time than required using conventional detailed package models.

New features of Version 5.1 include a faster, more accurate nonlinear optimizer, support for additional nodes, user access to setup parameters, and the ability to create compact models from non-Flomerics simulation data. Flopack consists of a collection of “Smart Part” modules installed on a central Web server.

Power-Shielded Inductor

Pulse, a Technitrol company, has introduced a series of power-shielded surface-mount inductors with a 6.2-mm × 6.2-mm × 2-mm maximum footprint pack-age for dc-dc applications in consumer electronics products. All parts are RoHS compliant.

The PG0087NL series offers 24 different inductance values ranging from 1 µH to 5 µH along with saturation currents up to 3.5 A and dc resistances as low as 33 mW maximum. The inductors operate from -40°C to +130°C.

1-MHz PWM Regulator

Micrel's MIC2203 is a 1-MHz PWM synchronous buck converter capable of >90% efficiency across a wide load range. Even under light loading, the buck regulator can maintain both low noise levels and high efficiency thanks to a low supply current. A proprietary gate drive minimizes switching losses, allowing the new device to draw just 650 µA of current while switching at a fixed operating frequency of 1 MHz. The MIC2203 operates from a 2.3-V to 5.5-V input and generates an output voltage adjustable down to 0.5 V at 300 mA.

Offered in 3-mm × 3-mm MLF-10 and MSOP-10 packages, the MIC2203 is priced at $1.80 and $1.65, in 1000-piece quantities, respectively.
