Enhanced Miniature Package

Vishay's MicroSMP miniature package type for Schottky rectifiers and transient voltage suppressors (TVS) provides high-current power density and low thermal resistance. The package profile is 0.65 mm, with a footprint of 2.5 mm × 1.3 mm.

The six available MicroSMP Schottky rectifiers are rated up to 1 A at a 110°C lead temperature. The two available MicroSMP TVS devices feature a peak pulse power of 100 W at a 10/1000-µs waveform. All the devices offer a 25-A forward-surge current capability for an 8.3-ms pulse. Pricing for each device is less than $0.03 each in 1000-piece quantities.

Dual-Edge Controllers

ON Semiconductor's NCP5387 is a two-, three- or four-phase controller suitable for VR10.x, VR11.0 and Parallel VID desktops. The NCP5382 is a four-, five- or six-phase controller suitable for server power supplies. Both devices combine differential voltage and current sensing, and adaptive-voltage positioning. Dual-edge PWM combined with inductor current sensing provides fast initial response to transient loads. Dynamic reference injection makes the error amplifier compensation virtually independent of the system response to VID changes.

The NCP5387 is available in a QFN-40 package and priced at $1.27 each, while the NCP5382 is housed in a QFN-48 package and is priced at $1.75 each, both in 2500-unit quantities.

Programmable Power Managers

The SMB113A and SMB117 from Summit Microelectronics are programmable power managers that integrate four identical channels of PWM dc-dc stepdown converters. The PWM channels on both devices are digitally programmable for output characteristics and monitoring, including voltage output levels to ±1.5% accuracy. The SMB113A operates at a switching frequency of 800 kHz, while the SMB117 operates at a switching frequency of 400 kHz. Switching dead time is adjustable.

The SMB113A and SMB117 are available in a thermally enhanced 5-mm × 5-mm, 32-pad QFN package. Both devices are priced at $2.26 each for the commercial temperature range and $2.56 each for the industrial temperature range in quantities of 1000.

Efficient MOSFETs

NEC Electronics America's uPA273xUT1A family is designed for use in the protection circuitry of Li-ion batteries for notebook PCs, while its uPA272xUT1A family is designed for use in dc-dc or point-of-load converters. Fabricated with a 0.25-m process, the MOSFETs have on-resistances ranging from 2 mΩ to 7.7 mΩ in the uPA272xUT1A family, and from 2.6 mΩ to 3.1Ω m in the uPA273xUT1A family. The devices keep heat dissipation to 4.6 W.

Both the uPA272xUT1A and uPA273xUT1A are housed in an 8-pin HVSON package that fits into the SOP-8 footprint.

Secure Battery-Backup Controller

Dallas Semiconductor's DS3641 is a secure battery-backup controller for point-of-sale terminals and other applications containing sensitive data. The device integrates a real-time clock (RTC), an automatic battery switch and a four-wire interface in a chip-scale BGA, and provides active tamper detection and rapid erasure of key memory. The nonvolatile memory architecture constantly complements the static random access memory cells to eliminate the possibility of memory imprinting due to oxide stress.

The DS3641 also provides tamper-detection inputs to interface with and provide low-power continuous monitoring of system voltages, resistive meshes, external sensors and digital interlocks. The RTC's crystal oscillator is also monitored and will invoke a tamper response if the frequency falls outside the set threshold. The DS3641 supports FIPS 140 security levels 3 and 4, and meets the highest requirements of the Common Criteria, PCI-PED and EMV-4.1 certification entities.

Energy-Metering IC

Austriamicrosystems' AS8268 single-phase, system-on-chip energy-metering IC fulfills all utility antitamper requirements. The device incorporates required functional blocks for single-phase metering including a precision-energy-measurement front end, an 8-bit microcontroller, 32 kbytes of on-chip Flash memory, a real-time clock, a 96-segment LCD driver, 12 programmable multipurpose I/Os and an on-chip temperature sensor.

Active energy, mains voltage and mains current are calculated directly within the on-chip digital signal processor. Reactive power and apparent power can also be calculated by user-configurable application software. The AS8268 is available in a LQFP-64 package.

Electroluminescent Driver

Supertex's HV853 is an inductorless electroluminescent (EL) lamp-driver IC. It requires no external components when the external clock frequency is used for the lamp frequency. The IC uses a charge-pump scheme and requires no external inductor, diode or high-voltage capacitor. It drives EL lamps of up to 1.5 in2 with capacitive values up to 5.3 nF. The VPK-PK output voltage of the IC is 160 V from an input of 3.2 V to 5 V.

The HV853 is available in MSOP-8 and DFN-8 packages. Pricing is $1.14 each for the MSOP-8 and $1.16 each for the DFN-8, both in quantities of 1000.

Thin-Fin Heatsinks

Thermaltake Technologies' thin-fin coolers are specially designed for dc-dc converters in full-brick and half-brick sizes. The CL-C0042 heatsink is an all-aluminum extruded solution with 32 linear thin fins and a thermal resistance of 2.36°C/W at a flow velocity of 200 ft/min (1 m/s) with nonuniform heating in a 1U chassis configuration. The CL-C0042Z heatsink offers 42 linear stamped fins and has a thermal resistance of 0.43°C/W at a flow velocity of 200 ft/min (1 m/s) with nonuniform heating in a 1U chassis configuration.

Flameproof Power Resistors

IRC Wire and Film Technologies Division's commercial-grade cement-housed vertical-mount power resistors — designated the CVW (wirewound) and CVF (film) series — are ideal for industrial applications.

The CVW series features a resistance range from 0.1Ω to 910Ω, while the CVF Series has a resistance range of 28Ω to 200 kΩ. Standard tolerances for both devices are to ±5% and ±10%, with TCRs of ±400 ppm/°C at less than 20Ω and ±350 ppm/°C at 20 and above.

In quantities of 10,000, pricing for the CVW and CVF resistors ranges from $0.09 each to $0.17 each, depending on resistance values.

BI Technologies Electronic Components Division's Model P232 potentiometer has a life cycle up to 2 million rotations. The potentiometer features a resistance range of 1 kΩ to 1 MΩ and standard tolerance to ±10%. Its maximum input voltage is 200 Vdc, with a dielectric strength of 500 Vac. The operating temperature range is -10°C to 85°C.

PoE Powered-Device Controller

Linear Technology's LTC4264 is a power-over-Ethernet (PoE) interface controller for high-power powered-device applications. The IC allows users to develop high-power applications beyond the 12.95-W limit mandated by IEEE 802.3af, while still maintaining backward compatibility. The LTC4264 can deliver up to 35 W for two-pair systems and as much as 70 W for four-pair systems.

Compatible with most current decisions on the PoE+ (P802.at) Committee, the LTC4264 is offered in a thermally enhanced 12-pin 4-mm × 3-mm DFN package for superior high current performance. Pricing for the IC starts at $1.80 each in 1000-piece quantities.

Rail-Mount Power Supplies

Lambda's DSP series supplies are available with nominal outputs from 5 V to 24 V and power levels from 10 W to 100 W in four packages sizes. Load regulation is less than 1% from no load to full load, with ripple and noise below 50 mV. To compensate for cable-voltage drops, the output voltage can be adjusted from the front panel. The power supplies feature universal input. Models are approved to UL60950-1, EN60950-1 and UL1310 specifications (less than 4-A units), and are listed to UL508. The supplies are convection cooled.

The DSP series units are enclosed in a plastic case measuring 0.71 in. × 3.58 in. × 2.2 in. (10-W models) or 3.54 in. × 3.58 in. × 2.2 in. (100-W models), and will mount on either a TS35/7.5 or TS35/15 DIN rail. Pricing for the power supplies starts at $20.50 each in 10-unit quantities.

Dual LDOs

Texas Instruments' TPS719xx family of dual, 200-mA low-dropout regulators (LDOs) provide high PSRR over a wide frequency range of up to 10-MHz and have a 160-µs startup time while consuming 90-µA of ground current with both LDOs enabled. These LDOs feature an active shutdown circuit to quickly discharge capacitors at the output voltage. The TPS719xx devices are stable with 1-µF ceramic capacitors and leverage a linear bipolar complementary metal-oxide semiconductor process technology to yield a typical dropout voltage of 230-mV at 200-mA output current.

The TPS719xx devices come in a 6-pin 2-mm × 2-mm SON package. Pricing for the LDOs is $0.75 each in quantities of 1000.

Feedthrough Filters and Capacitors

Tyco Electronics' line of CORCOM-brand feedthrough filters and capacitors are designed to meet EN133200 class Y2 requirements. The FFA series feedthrough filters are rated for 250 Vac and comply with 5000-V pulse testing. The filters are available in eight current ratings. Designers may select from standard, high-performance or extended-performance grades in each current rating. FFD filters are suitable for dc applications and are designed to meet the requirements of EN133200 class Y4 and 2500-V pulse testing. Six current ratings from 10 A to 200 A are available in either standard or high-performance models.

A complete line of EN132400 class Y2 feedthrough capacitors also has been introduced. The AFC series feedthrough capacitor is available in nine current ranges from 10 A to 300 A. For dc applications, the CORCOM DFC feedthrough capacitor is rated for a range of 10 A to 300 A.

In quantities of 100, pricing for the AFC and DFC capacitors ranges from $40 each to $250 each, while pricing for the FFA and FFD filters ranges from $80 each to $350 each.

Off-Line 1U Converter

PowerGate's RSP-1000 series of low-profile, 1000-W switching power supplies consists of five models offering single-output voltages of 12 Vdc, 15 Vdc, 24 Vdc, 27 Vdc and 48 Vdc. The supplies feature universal ac input with active PFC and 5-V, 500-mA standby power. Up to four supplies can be connected in parallel. Units also feature built-in dc fans, remote sense and active current sharing.

Transient Voltage Suppressors

The AOZ8xxx TVS product family from Alpha and Omega Semiconductor exceeds the IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 specification for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection (±8 kV for contact and ±15 kV for air discharge). The AOZ8005 and AOZ8007 offer four lines of protection from ESD strikes, with the AOZ8007 providing ±15 kV for contact and ±18 kV for air discharge, far exceeding the IEC61000-4-2 level 4 specification. The AOZ8000 and AOZ8001 protect four lines and two lines, respectively. The AOZ8900 is designed to protect four lines and provides ESD protection of ±12 kV for contact and ±15 kV for air discharge.

Encapsulated Medical Converter

BEAR Power Supplies' 30-W ac-dc power converter is ideal for use in compact medical instruments without fans or vents. The unit has been approved for use in medical electrical equipment, and it recently passed TUV testing to meet UL 2601-1, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.601.1-M90, EN 60601-1-2 and IEC 601-1 requirements. The single-output encapsulated modules are available in output voltages ranging from 3.3 V to 48 V. They feature a leakage current of 0.5 mA (maximum) and an operating temperature range to 70°C.

Demagnitization Simulator

Vector Fields has released a 3-D version of its electromagnetic modeling software for simulating permanent magnet characteristics. The package offers a powerful dedicated tool for developers of magnetic components and a very broad range of electrical and other equipment. Called DEMAG, the solver allows designers to optimize equipment designs by accurately simulating both the magnetization process and the subsequent demagnetization effects that might be encountered.

DEMAG represents permanent magnet materials by interpolation from actual measured B-H (magnetic induction and applied field) characteristics, and can be configured to simulate any magnetic material. Rather than using a theoretical magnetization distribution, the true distribution is calculated from the properties of the magnetizing fixture.
