Power IC for LCD Displays
Texas Instruments (TI) has announced a high-performance power management integrated circuit (IC) that efficiently supports all four voltage requirements in a thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) panel.
TI's single-chip TPS65160 incorporates two high-efficiency dc-dc converters, two charge pumps, a wide range of safety features and adjustable power-on sequencing functionality. Supporting input voltages from 8 V to 14 V, the integrated device includes a 2.6-A switch-mode boost converter to provide the source voltage for the system; a 1.8-A nonsynchronous stepdown converter to provide the logic voltage; and positive and negative charge pump drivers with adjustable regulated output voltages to ensure optimal picture quality.
Key technical features include an 8-V to 14-V input-voltage range; Vs output-voltage range up to 20 V; 1% accurate boost converter with a 2.6-A switch current; 1.5% accurate 1.8-A stepdown converter; 500-kHz to 750-kHz fixed-switching frequency; negative charge pump driver for VGL; positive charge pump driver for VGH; and adjustable sequencing for VGL, VGH.
Suggested pricing for the TPS65160 power converter is $2.60 in quantities of 1000.
Renesas Technology has introduced a power MOSFET chip set that achieves 90% power efficiency in a dc-dc converter with a 12-V input and 1.3-V and 20-A output. The chip set comprises an RJK0305DPB high-side power MOSFET and an RJK0301DPB low-side power MOSFET.
The devices are ideal for dc-dc converters that change a 12-V or 19-V input to an output in the 0.8-V to 2.5-V range. Key specifications are shown in the table.
Both MOSFETs come in an LFPAK package. Pricing for the RJK0305DPB is $1 each in quantities of 10,000, and pricing for the RJK0301DPB is $1.50 each in quantities of 10,000.

Smart Power Modules
Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced a series of Smart Power Module (SPM) products that provide efficient motor control for energy-restricted white goods, such as washing machines and air conditioners. The new Mini-SPM Series consists of a suite of seven modules offering best-in-class thermal resistance. Each module integrates three high-voltage integrated circuits (HVICs), one low-voltage integrated circuit (LVIC), six IGBTs and six fast-recovery diodes.
Designers can achieve increased design flexibility for the entire power range from 0.3 kW to 3 kW, as these devices range from 3 A to 30 A in a single-package outline. The Mini-SPM series utilizes a 44-mm × 26.8-mm Mini-DIP package and incorporates built-in HVICs that provide an optocoupler-less, single-supply IGBT gate-driving capability.

The 8001 high-power Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Midspan from PowerDsine is a single-port model designed for Ethernet-connected devices that have high-power consumption requirements, such as pan-tilt-zoom network cameras. Complementing the existing 6- and 12-port versions of the 8000 high-power PoE Midspan, the model offers a cost-effective solution for small enterprise environments. Samples are now available.
AC-DC Power Supplies
Wall Industries has released the PSA Series, a line of encapsulated, pc board-mount switching ac-dc power supplies. Designed for ruggedized industrial applications, the PSA Series accepts a universal input range of 90 Vac to 260 Vac. Each power supply can deliver a choice of single, dual or triple outputs of 3.3 Vdc, 5 Vdc, 12 Vdc, 15 Vdc or 24 Vdc. Depending on the model, the PSA Series can deliver 5 W, 10 W, 15 W or 30 W of output power at efficiencies of up to 84%.
The power supply dimensions range from 1 in. × 2 in. × 0.60 in. for a 5-W supply and upward to 3.5 in. × 2.5 in. × 0.98 in. for a 30-W supply. Other features include regulated outputs, continuous short-circuit protection, low noise and ripple, and an operating range from -25°C to 71°C The PSA Series is priced in OEM quantities at $16 to $34, depending on the model type and wattage/power.
Synchronous Buck Regulator
Microchip Technology has released the MCP1612, a single 1-A, 1.4-MHz synchronous buck regulator capable of regulating battery and bus voltages down to levels required by operating systems. The device is ideally suited to be powered from a single Li-ion cell, multiple alkaline or nickel-metal-hydride cells, or dc bus voltages of 3.3 V or 5 V.
The MCP1612 buck-switching regulator utilizes current-mode control to provide dynamic responses to quick changes in input voltage or output-load current. This regulator operates at a constant switching frequency of 1.4 MHz at loads up to 1 A. An important feature of the MCP1612 is its stability with the use of ceramic capacitors as well as the larger tantalum and electrolytic capacitors.
The integrated buck and synchronous switches eliminate the need for an external Schottky diode. Other features include overtemperature and overcurrent protection, undervoltage lockout, shutdown and automatic soft-start capabilities.
The MCP1612 is available for sampling and volume production in an 8-lead MSOP package. An 8-lead DFN package version is available for sampling and volume production. Pricing in 1000-unit quantities is $1.31 each for the MSOP package, $1.39 each for the DFN package.
Battery-charging transformers from Foster Transformer feature ferroresonant technology providing a tapered charge for fast recovery and maximum battery life. Coils are layer-wound with interlayer insulation for maximum reliability and long service life. Suited for 120-V/240-V input at 60 Hz, these unique designs are inherently protected against shorts and overloads.
Models are available for standard battery voltages with output regulated against changes in line voltage. Foster's battery-charger transformers are ideal for industrial battery-charging applications. Models offer output-current ratings from 7.5 A to 80 A. It works with ac-motor run capacitors rated at 370 V ac or higher.
Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors
AVX now offers a range of 50-V and 100-V high-capacitance input filters in smaller case sizes of 0805, 1206, 1210 and 1812. Specifically designed for power distribution applications, the capacitor for input circuitry has a range of capacitance values from 0.1 µF to 2.2 µF. High-capacitance values make the capacitors ideal for use as an input filter to a dc-dc converter because the inherent low ESR reduces the ripple voltage across the input terminals. The capacitors also are appropriate for use in PoE applications.
These multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) feature a base metal electrode system and a soft termination system that provide low ESR and improved user-reliability performance compared to standard termination systems. Pricing varies depending on case size and quantity.

TDK's series of compact, low-cost power supply transformers designed for a wide range of applications is now available. The company overhauled its power supply transformer products, creating new transformers that are up to 30% more compact and require up to 20% less mounting space than earlier products with the same output.
TDK optimized the core materials and configurations used in standard power supply transformer components according to specific applications. In order to create transformers optimized for specific applications, such as ac adaptors and various types of audio-visual devices, TDK developed and adopted new technologies, including new core configurations and thinner cores. This series of transformers can be used in a variety of application devices that require low-profile shapes, compactness and low-heat generation, and will contribute to smaller and lighter-weight devices.
900-W Peak Power Supplies
Advanced Power Solutions (APS) has unveiled a family of industrial power supplies that deliver peak loads up to 900 W from a family of 500-W to 800-W switchers. These U-frame products measure 4.33 in. × 8-in. × 2.5 in. The APS500, 600 and 800 family of flexible power supplies offer IEC-320 inlet with switch, terminal block or molex connections; constant voltage or constant-current operation; status and control signals; and internal ORing diodes for redundancy.
With efficiencies up to 83%, these supplies generate little heat and require only 30 cfm airflow for cooling. The products feature universal ac input with active power factor correction for EN61000-3-2 (Class A) compliance; operating temperatures from -20°C to 50°C; and built-in overcurrent, overtemperature and overvoltage protection circuits.

Step-Up DC-DC Converter
The NCP1423 from ON Semiconductor is a monolithic, micropower, high-frequency step-up dc-dc switching converter that boosts the voltage from one or two nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) or nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells up to a usable level of 1.8 V or 3.3 V. This device is specifically designed for battery-operated portable electronic products, supplying up to 400 mA.
The NCP1423 integrates synchronous rectification to improve efficiency and eliminate the external Schottky diode. Its high switching frequency — up to 600 kHz — allows for a low-profile, small-sized inductor and output capacitor to be used. When the device is disabled, the internal conduction path from the LX or BAT pin to the OUT pin is fully blocked — and the OUT pin is isolated from the battery. This true-cutoff function reduces the shutdown current.
The NCP1423DMR2 is available in a Micro-10 package. Pricing starts at $0.95 per unit in quantities of 10,000.
Linear Technology has introduced the LTC3808, a stepdown synchronous dc-dc controller with integrated spread-spectrum-frequency modulation for systems requiring low EMI and low noise power supply. The device minimizes the need for EMI shields and filters by randomly varying the switching frequency from 460 kHz to 635 kHz, reducing the peak radiated and conducted noise of the dc-dc controller alternatively by more than 20 dB when operating the LTC3808 at a constant-switching frequency. The device provides user-selectable 300-kHz, 550-kHz or 750-kHz operating frequency or 250-kHz to 750-kHz phase-lock loop operation.
The LTC3808 converts input voltages of 2.75 V to 9.8 V to output voltages as low as 0.6 V up to VIN. The device drives external complementary power MOSFETs with synchronous operation for high-efficiency dc-dc conversion. The controller can deliver as much as 5 A to the load while operating at 90% efficiency.
The LTC3808 is offered in two packages: a low-profile 4-mm × 3-mm DFN and a 16-lead SSOP. Pricing starts at $2.60 each for 1000-piece quantities.
Inverter for CCFL-Backlit LCDs
The new DmF6 Series of dc-ac inverters from Endicott Research Group (ERG) offers flat-panel display integrators a high-power inverter in a compact package (less than 9 mm high) for powering up to six cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) used to backlight LCDs in the 19-in. to 24-in. diagonal size range.
ERG's DmF6 Series is designed to power up to six CCFLs with combined lamp power up to 60 W, and provides a starting voltage up to 2400 V with full flicker-free brightness control from 0% to 100%.
DmF6 Series inverters feature an optimized form factor, high-efficiency, on-board transformers and on-board connectors for direct connection to the display, all on a single low-profile pc board measuring 9.52-in. × 2.83-in. For dimming, an external enable/disable control and an on-board analog-controlled pulse-width modulator (PWM) provide flexibility by allowing use of either PWM or analog methods for dimming.
DmF6 Series inverters dim to less than 0.5% duty cycle, resulting in a dimming ratio of less than 200-to-1. Optical-dimming ratios of greater than 1000-to-1 can be achieved. Pricing for DmF6 Series inverters is typically less than $40 each in production quantities.

Sealed VRLA Battery
ODYSSEY Batteries of EnerSys Reserve Power Group has introduced a Group 31-size deep-cycle sealed valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery that provides a service life that's three to four times longer than typical wet cell batteries. Using pure-lead technology, the battery lasts up to 10 years in operation, has starting power up to 12 months in storage and a 2-year storage life at room temperature. Additionally, the battery's thin plate technology provides greater cranking power, which is especially effective at cold temperatures.
Specifications include cold cranking amps (CCA) of 1090 A at -18°C, cranking amps (CA/MCA) of 1370 A at 0°C and hot cranking amps (HCA) of 1545 A at 27°C. The 5-sec CCA and HCA rates are 1500 A at -18°C and 2150 A at 27°C. The battery features a reserve capacity of 185 min, and a deep-cycle capability of 400 cycles at 100% depth of discharge.
The battery weighs 89 lb and measures 13 in. × 6.8 in. × 9.4 in. Pricing for the new ODYSSEY PC2150 starts at $267.97.

Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX5062 and MAX5063 high-voltage, high-speed, half-bridge MOSFET drivers capable of driving high-side (HS) and low-side (LS) n-channel MOSFETs. The MAX5062A and MAX5063A are pin-for-pin compatible with the industry-standard HIP2100 and HIP2101, respectively. The MAX5062 and MAX5063's 2-A peak source/sink current and low 35-ns propagation delay allow the design of high-power and high-frequency power supplies. Moreover, the propagation delay matching between the HS and LS drivers is guaranteed to be 8 ns (maximum). The devices' logic inputs operate at up to +15 V regardless of the V+ supply voltage. Several versions are available with the choice of TTL-compatible or CMOS-compatible noninverting/noninverting or noninverting/inverting logic inputs. The MAX5062 and MAX5063 are available in standard 8-pin and thermally enhanced 8-pin SO packages. Prices start at $1.43 each in quantities of 1000.
