Many semiconductor companies have made outstanding contributions to power electronics during the past three decades. The editors of powerelectronics.com identified 30 semiconductor companies that have contributed products and technology that have made the industry what it is today.

These 30 semiconductor companies provided the enabling technology for power electronics systems. Enabling products include power semiconductors, analog, digital and mixed-signal ICs, and power ICs. New types continue to develop through ongoing research. Although silicon has been the predominant material for semiconductors, wide bandgap materials that include silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) now power higher-performance power electronics systems.

The legacy of Power Electronics Technology magazine, powerelectronics.com, and its predecessor PCIM magazine have guided designers in the power electronics industry with technical information unavailable elsewhere. Initially, bipolar power transistors—including thyristors—and bipolar integrated circuits provided the control for motors, power supplies, and other loads. Today’s semiconductors include digital control from microcontrollers and digital signal processors that control smart-power ICs, MOSFETs, and IGBTs, as well as SiC and GaN devices. The Top 30 semiconductor companies have supplied the above products to industrial, consumer, and aerospace system manufacturers.

Many changes have occurred in the semiconductor industry since the magazine started in 1977, with new names appearing and old names disappearing through mergers, acquisitions, and spin-offs. This listing includes companies that have gone through recent changes.

We have picked our Top 30 based on our review of new products that come across our desk, plus interviews at conferences, telephone conversations, and meetings. We sent each company a preliminary list of its products and asked for verification. The listings here reflect the company’s feedback to our preliminary list. Companies are listed in alphabetic order.
