Microchip Technology's Mindi is a web-based simulation tool that aids in the design of several circuits useful for power-management applications. The simulator enables designers to quickly generate circuit diagrams and specify associated passive components for power-supply and battery-charger applications. Circuits developed using the Mindi simulation tool can be downloaded to a PC and ported into system diagrams.
Based upon the circuit, the tool recommends a wide range of Microchip PIC microcontrollers and analog products. It also provides real-time updates for the latest circuit developments and products. The Mindi simulator is available for free on Microchip's website.
Systel Development and Industries' series of power-controller ICs is based on Systel's IDC2000 (Integrated Digital Control) SoC platform. This architecture combines all the advantages of analog and DSP processor technologies with the customized attribute of an ASIC and the configuration power of a field programmable gate array, while doing away with their particular limitations.
This platform comprises power-control functions such as PFC and power line communication. The smart algorithms implemented in the IDC2000 allow the diminishing of the passive component precision, further reducing the component cost of the end product.
The IDC2000 was built to implement any conceivable dimmable and nondimmable electronic ballasts for any type of lamp or a combination of them using the graphical user interface design tools developed by Systel.

Micrel's dual ultralow dropout voltage linear regulator, the MIC5310, offers 35 mV at 150 mA, more than 70-dB power-supply ripple rejection (PSRR) and low output noise. The part is offered in a 2-mm × 2-mm 8-pin leadless MLF package.
The MIC5310 integrates two independently controlled, high-performance LDOs, requiring only 1-µF ceramic capacitors. Both LDOs feature a low quiescent current of 75 µA per output, turn-on time of 30 µs, current limit and thermal shutdown protection, and can operate from -40°C to 125°C. The IC is available now in volume. Pricing starts at $0.60 in quantities of 1000.

IGBT Gate Driver
The BG2C from Powerex is a universal two-channel gate-drive prototype board designed for use with high-frequency optimized IGBT modules. The BG2C uses Powerex's VLA507 and VLA514 hybrid gate drivers and VLA106 series dc-dc converters to provide efficient switching of modules rated up to 300 A.
The hybrid gate drivers include optocouplers with typical propagation delay times of 200 ns for control signal isolation. The hybrid converters provide fully isolated control power for each driving channel.
The BG2C is designed for use with Powerex's NFH Series and CM***DUS-12F high-frequency IGBT modules. The VLA106-15242 dc-dc converter is for 15-Vdc control power. The VLA106-24242 dc-dc converter operates with 24-Vdc control power. Pricing is from $83 to $108 each, depending on the rating.
Phihong's 24-port gigabit Power-over-Ethernet midspan, the POE370U Series, is ideal for 10-, 100- and 1000-Base-T networks.
The device features IEEE 802.3af detection, disconnect and overload protection. Each product can fully support 15.4 W per port, eliminating the need for power management and prioritization. The midspan has Cisco legacy detection without the need of external dongles, as well as an optional NIC interface. Each product is provided with a graphics user interface for diagnostics or remote control.
The POE370U measures 17.25 in. × 8.98 in. × 1.75 in. and weighs 9 lb. Pricing of the POE370U 24-port midspan is $499 each.
40-A Power Supplies
Phoenix Contact's QUINT single-phase, 40-A, 24-Vdc power supplies offer an adjustable output voltage between 22.5 Vdc and 29.5 Vdc. Phoenix Contact's Power Boost technology provides permanent power reserve for heavy inductive loads. In case of supply failures, full output power is available for more than 20 ms.
QUINT power supplies have a greater than 500,000-hour MTBF rating and a five-year U.S. warranty. They are applicable in all industrial sectors and suitable for use around the world thanks to their wide input voltage range from 85 Vac to 264 Vac and 120 Vdc to 350 Vdc as well as their international certifications.
Tantalum Chip Capacitor
Vishay's new 298D MicroTan surface-mount lead-frameless tantalum capacitors provide capacitance values from 1 µF at 16 V to 47 µF at 4 V in the 0603 and 0805 footprints. The devices offer a capacitance tolerance of ±20%, voltage ratings from 4 W Vdc to 16 W Vdc, low ESR and 0.01 CV dc leakage values.
Production quantities are available now. In 10,000-piece quantities, pricing for the 298D tantalum capacitors starts at $0.10 per piece.
Micro DC-DC Converters
Vicor has added seven mid-power dc-dc converters to its high-density 24-Vdc input Micro family: 50-W models with outputs of 3.3 V, 5 V, 12 V, 15 V, 24 V, 28 V and 48 V. The modules incorporate Vicor's low-noise zero-current and zero-voltage switching.
The addition of these modules doubles the size of the high-power-density 24-VIN Micro family, which previously consisted of 75 W at 3.3-VOUT and 100 W for VOUT values of 5 V, 12 V, 15 V, 24 V, 28 V and 48 V. The converters operate from 24-V nominal input, with an input range of 18 V to 36 V, and will operate down to 16 V after startup. Efficiencies reach 89% for the higher output voltages.
The modules are 2.28-in. × 1.45-in. × 0.5-in. with a height above the board of 0.43 in. The Micro converters are available now. Pricing is $48 in quantities of 1000.
TT electronics' BI Technologies' Electronic Components division has developed a fixed-output 2-W dc-dc converter: the 831 Series. The converter may be vertically or horizontally mounted.
The converters feature a fixed output voltage of 5 V (3.3 V available) up to 400 mA output current, and an input-voltage range of 12 Vdc to 32Vdc. Line regulation is 1% (measured at 16 V to 32 V at 400 mA) with load regulation of 1.0% (at 100 mA to 400 mA). BI Technologies also will produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.
This converter eliminates heatsink requirements and is housed in a 9-pin, 1-in × 0.5-in. × 0.225-in. package. Typical pricing for the 831 Series converters is approximately $4 in medium-range volumes.
AVX's TBW Series Tantalum Fused Capacitor provides increased protection against short-circuit failure modes. Using a thin film technology, the TBW Fused Capacitor has an internal fuse to protect against short circuits, as well as low ESR limits. Applications for the capacitor include any military or aerospace circuitry where derating is marginal or voltage breakdown is a concern.
Capacitance values range from 4.7 µF to 47 µF, with a capacitance tolerance of ±10% to ±20%. This tantalum capacitor series has a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C.
Pricing for the TBW Tantalum Fused Capacitor starts at $6 each in quantities of 1000.

Linear Technology's LT3837 is a synchronous flyback dc-dc controller with precision regulation and high efficiency for 10 W to 60 W isolated power supplies. The IC has 9 V to 36 V input-voltage operation.
The LT3837 is a current-mode controller that regulates the output voltage based on sensing secondary voltage directly from the primary-side winding. This allows for tight output-voltage regulation without the use of an optoisolator, improving dynamic response and system reliability.
The LT3837 can be used to convert an input supply of 9 V to 36 V to an isolated output of 3.3 V at 12 A with up to 90% efficiency and with precise ±1% regulation.
An adjustable primary gate delay eliminates multiple discrete components from the circuit and optimizes MOSFET switching time and transformer selection. To further simplify the design, the LT3837 allows its switching frequency to be adjusted from 50 kHz to 250 kHz with a capacitor. The IC also can be synchronized to an external oscillator.
The LT3837 is offered in a thermally enhanced 16-lead TSSOP package. Pricing for 1000 pieces is set at $3.10 each.
Ceramic Chip Coil
TDK's MLG0402 series of 0402-sized multilayer ceramic chip coil is available in 14 products. Values range from 1 nH to 12 nH. DC resistance for the devices ranges from 0.3 Ω to 1.5 Ω. Self-resonating frequency is 2 GHz for the 12N product and 10 GHz for the 1N0 product. The minimum Q factor for all devices is 3.
Foster Transformer's 15349 and 15964 transformer models are certified to stringent EN 61558-1 specifications for isolation transformers. In addition, model 15349 is certified to UL 1585 as an inherently limited transformer. This model accepts inputs of 200 Vac to 230 Vac at 50 Hz or 60 Hz with 24-V output having a capacity of 75 VA.
Model 15964 is also UL listed as an industrial control transformer, with an input of 120 Vac or 240 Vac at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. Output is 24 V center tap (VCT) and a capacity of 192 VA.
Each model includes UL Recognized Class 130 (B) insulation. Versions with alternate primary voltages and VA ratings can be configured to meet specific customer requirements.
Falcon Electric's SSG Series 500-VA frequency converter is a single-phase on-line frequency converter, voltage regulator and line conditioner. Using field-proven double-conversion design, the converter offers high-power quality without sacrificing efficiency, size or weight, which is held to 14 lb.
The converter accepts a 45-Hz to 440-Hz input, yielding a fixed-crystal-controlled 50-Hz or 60-Hz output. Falcon's compact converter provides precise voltage regulation and line conditioning. The SSG Series converter can easily accept wide input variations and remain at their designed voltage and frequency, allowing connected equipment to continuously operate during extended brownouts to 88 Vac.
Featuring high-frequency galvanic isolation, connected equipment is isolated against damaging high-voltage transients and common-mode noise. Battery Fuel Gauge
Dallas Semiconductor's DS2756 is a high-precision battery fuel gauge that integrates precise current, voltage and temperature measurements along with nonvolatile data storage. The DS2756 contains three power states: active, sleep and suspend.
Using suspend mode, the DS2756 remains in an ultralow power state while the host product is in a low-power operative state such as standby. The DS2756 periodically cycles between suspend mode and active mode to measure current at a reduced supply as low as 10 µA. Cycling between these power states lets the DS2756 detect if the pack is being discharged or charged above programmable low-current suspend thresholds.
The DS2756 measures current, average current and accumulated current. Using a 20-mΩ sense resistor, current accumulation is performed over a range of ±3.2 A. An external filtering capacitor allows peak currents of higher values to be integrated in the current-accumulation (fuel-gauging) measurement. Accumulated current is reported with an accuracy of ±2% of reading, ±3.9 µV over an input range of ±64 mV. Standby currents are measured with an accuracy of ±195 µA.
The device is available in an 8-pin TSSOP package. Pricing for the DS2756 starts at $1.90 in quantities of 1000.

DC Motor Driver
The A3901 from Allegro MicroSystems is a dual H-bridge, low-voltage motor driver capable of operating one stepper motor or two dc motors. MOSFET output stages substantially reduce the voltage drop and the power dissipation of the outputs of the A3901 compared to typical drivers with bipolar transistors.
The A3901 is designed for portable applications with a power-off (sleep-mode) current of 50 nA (typical) and an operating voltage range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V. Output current can be regulated by pulse-width modulating the inputs. Both H-bridges can be paralleled for higher current operation. Internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdown with hysteresis, transient-suppression diodes and crossover current protection. The A3901 is priced at $0.49 in quantities of 1000.
Modular Distribution System
The X8345-D01 Power Distribution System from E-T-A Circuit Breakers is a 2U-height (3.5-in.) rail system designed for mounting 8345 plug-in hot-swap circuit breakers either in 19-in., 21-in. or ETSI racks. When populated with E-T-A's 8345 magnetic circuit breakers, the X8345-D01 has a total load capacity of 600 A with a maximum of 125 A per channel — each offering group signalization. Systems can be extended or reconfigured without powering down, as X8345 circuit breakers are hot-swappable. Live parts in the plug-in area of the load terminals are protected against brush contact to IP20.
E-T-A's 8345 magnetic circuit breakers are rated up to 277 Vac or 110 Vdc and handle from 0.05 A to 125 A. They are approved to UL489, UL1077 and EN 60934, requiring the circuit breaker to be fit for further use after interrupting a short circuit at the maximum specified fault rating. The maximum load for a complete X8345-D01 is 600 A.
E-T-A's X8345-D01 Power Distribution System is built to order. A 4-module system is priced from $250 in volume.
E-T-A Circuit Breakers
The Buchanan 0.375-in. center line JC6 series dual-barrier strip from Tyco Electronics provides convenient termination for wire and cable applications where panel-mounting or pc-board installation is necessary. The molded-to-length product is available in 2 through 23 positions and can be configured with accessories such as quick-connect tabs and jumpers. Designers may select from SEMS or binding head screws.
JC6 barrier strips carry component recognition from UL and CSA. JC6 barrier strips are rated for 20 A at 300 Vac or 5 A at 600 Vac and accept 12 AWG to 22 AWG copper wire (stranded or solid). The insulator is UL 94V-0 black thermoplastic and contacts are tin-plated brass.
The barrier strips are priced at $0.25 to $0.33 per pole depending on the terminal style in quantities of 1000.
Two additions to Picor's quiet-power input (QPI) filter products are the QPI-12 V•I Chip EMI filter and the QPI-10 V•I Chip EMI filter with hot swap. The QPI-12 EMI filter is specifically designed to attenuate conducted common-mode and differential-mode noise to comply with CISPR22 requirements. The filter is designed to operate from 10 Vdc to 76 Vdc and supports 7-A loads up to 80°C; it is parallelable for higher power and occupies only 0.5 in2 of board area.
The QPI-10 complies with Advanced-TCA PICMG3.0 requirements for hot insertion and board-level conducted noise limitations defined by EN 55022 class B. The EMI filter provides conducted common-mode and differential-mode noise attenuation from 150 kHz to 30 MHz. The QPI-10 input range is 36 Vdc to 76 Vdc. The inrush current limit and circuit breaker are designed to satisfy the 200 W per board PICMG3.0 limit up to 70°C PCB temperature around the QPI-10.
The QPI-12 is packaged in a 12.4-mm × 25-mm × 4.5-mm sized LGA SiP; the QPI-10 is a 25-mm × 25-mm × 4.5-mm SiP. In 1000 unit quantities, the QPI-12 sells for $6.75 each and the QPI-10 sells for $12.10 each.

International Rectifier's IRF7835PbF and IRF7836PbF are 30-V synchronous buck HEXFET MOSFETs for dc-dc synchronous point-of-load (POL) converters. The IRF7835PbF supports applications requiring a thermal design current of 35 A from a two-phase voltage regulator using one control and two synchronous MOSFETs per phase. The device may be used in applications up to 11 A per MOSFET. The IRF7836PbF is designed for power rails using a single control and a single synchronous MOSFET, and may be used in applications up to 9 A per MOSFET.
When VGS is 4.5 V, RDS(ON) is typically 4.5 mΩ for the IRF7835PbF and 5.7 mΩ for the IRF7836PbF. When VGS is 10 V, this decreases to 3.6 mΩ and 4.5 mΩ, respectively.
