Synchronous Boost Regulator Enables Longer-Lasting Battery Applications
MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY Inc announced the MCP1640 synchronous boost regulator, which features an operating voltage down to 0.35V, quiescent current as low as 19 µA, and shutdown current of less than 1 µA. With integrated dual FET transistors and output currents up to 350 mA, the 500 kHz MCP1640 regulator enables compact, longer-lasting battery applications in the consumer electronics market (e.g. electric razors, toothbrushes, GPS devices and portable music players), among others.
The MCP1640 regulator's operating voltage of down to 0.35V and start-up voltage of 0.65V allows use with even a single, completely drained alkaline, NiMh, or NiCad battery cell. A PWM/PFM option enables the device's low quiescent and shutdown currents, and provides up to 96% efficiency, allowing for longer battery run times. The regulator's two integrated FET transistors reduce component count, resulting in smaller overall designs.
Microchip also announced the MCP1640 Synchronous Boost Converter Evaluation Board, (MCP1640EV-SBC, $19.99). The board uses the MCP1640 step-up converter and demonstrates the minimum number of components for applications powered by one-, two-, or three-cell alkaline or NiCd/NiMH batteries; and one-cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer batteries. The board also shows example PCB layouts for the MCP1640 in 6-pin SOT-23 and 2 mm × 3 mm DFN packages.
The MCP1640 synchronous boost regulator is available in 6-pin SOT-23 and 2 mm × 3 mm DFN packages, for $0.41 each, in 10,000-unit quantities. Samples are available.
High Voltage/Current Diode Modules Block 6.5 or 11 kV
DEVELOPED TO meet the high-voltage blocking and high current requirements, Powerex is now offering two new high-voltage silicon diode modules (QRSB165001 and QRD6565001) which complement our standard 6500V HVIGBT product offering. Each configuration features ribbon-bonded, 67mm diode elements (two per module) which provide 650A of steady-state current. These devices are designed for high-voltage blocking applications, such as DC power supplies, pulse power, front-end converters, clamp diode for multi-level inverters, chopper diodes, and laser power supplies.
Offering an innovative corona-resistant package design, these modules are constructed to provide 11KV/650A single and 6.5KV/650A half-bridge configuration while providing 12KV isolation to the baseplate. 11KV is achieved by connecting matched diodes in series. All components and interconnects are isolated from the heat sinking baseplate, offering simplified system assembly and thermal management.
Both the single QRSB165001, rated at 11,000V/650A, and the dual QRD6565001, rated at 6500V/650A, feature:

Designated the VC121085S151 Series, the cost-effective single-chip solution provides bi-directional transient voltage protection in the on-state and excellent EMI/RFI attenuation in the off-state. 12-Channel Sequencer Integrates Fan Control and Multiphase PWM Clock Generator
TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Incorporated introduced the industry's first 12-channel sequencer and system health manager with fan control and multiphase PWM clock generator. The UCD90124 integrates system power management and system thermal management into one device, which reduces board space and eases design, while providing highly intelligent system health monitoring. The UCD90124 features power supply margining and comprehensive non-volatile error logging, allowing customers to diagnose power supply failures in their systems.
TI's easy-to-use Fusion Digital Power Designer Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows the designer to configure the UCD90124 via a PMBus™/I2C interface. The free, downloadable tool simplifies the development process and speeds time-to-market by allowing the designer to configure all device parameters in minutes.
Key features include being able to:
- Sequence and monitor up to 12 power supplies while simultaneously margining up to 10 rails.
- Manage power and monitor and control up to four fans with a single device.
- The UCD90124 has a built-in temperature control algorithm that automatically adjusts fan speed based on five configurable temperature zones..
- Alternatively, designers can use their own temperature control algorithm running on an external host and communicate desired fan speed via I2C commands. This level of intelligent system thermal management helps reduce audible system noise and extend the operating life of the fans.
- The auto-calibrate function automatically determines the turn on, turn off, and maximum duty cycle for the fan, which allows the designer to think in terms of operating speed and also accounts for environmental variables in fan speed.
