- HF Buck Converter
THE AP5100 step-down converter from Diodes Incorporated has been designed to bring space savings and efficiency improvements to set top box, modem and distributed power applications. Provided in the compact 6-pin SOT26 package, this low cost converter features a built-in power MOSFET and internal compensation to limit external component requirements. Operating at a fixed switching frequency of 1.4Mhz, the AP5100 also enables a reduction in the overall size of external components, particularly the inductor. With its low series on-resistance power MOSFET switch, the converter is capable of delivering a constant current output of up to 1.2A at 90% efficiency over a wide input supply range, from 4.75V to 24V. The output is adjustable via a resistor divider, from 0.81V to 15V. The device's current mode operation provides for a fast transient response over the full operating input voltage and temperature range. The AP5100 has an enable pin, allowing it to be put into standby mode where it consumes just 0.1µA. The AP5100 features on-chip thermal shutdown and overcurrent protection to help ensure long-term product reliability. The device is priced at $0.24 each in 1k quantities.
- Switch-Mode Power Supply Capacitors Receive Military QPL Approval
SPECTRUM ADVANCED Specialty Products announces the addition of MIL-PRF-49470 approval for Switch-Mode power supply capacitors to its extensive military QPL offerings. Spectrum's SMP capacitors have better performance than tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitors, featuring low ESR and ESL. These capacitors, available in industry-standard or custom case sizes, are all made in Spectrum's established MIL-STD-70 ceramic facility located in State College, PA. Spectrum's Switch Mode Power Supply capacitors are excellent for input/output filtering for military and high reliability power supplies and high capacitance discharge units. Functioning at high frequencies or high power, these capacitors have a capacitance of up to 47 µF, with tolerances of 5%, 10% or 20%. The capacitor is designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -55°C to +125°C, making it an ideal choice for a broad range of environments. To help safeguard the device from thermal and mechanical stresses, the capacitor is offered in through-hole or surface mount leaded configurations of N, J or L. Additionally, BP, BX, BR or BQ ceramics are available, all able to withstand voltages ranging from 50 to 500 VDC.
The MIL-PRF-49470 qualified Switch Mode Power Supply product adds to the already wide range of Spectrum QPL listings. - 3mV Dropout Voltage Reference Operates with Less than 1µA
LINEAR TECHNOLOGY announces the LT6656, a precision SOT23 voltage reference that operates on only 850nA of supply current. The LT6656 has an initial error of less than 0.05% and a guaranteed temperature drift of less than 10ppm/°C. This combination of precision and ultralow power is ideal for portable, wireless and remote devices. With an output drive capability of 5mA, the LT6656 is suitable for a wide range of applications. It can serve as both the supply voltage and the precision reference for a low power, high resolution ADC. The LT6656 can replace low power shunt references, offering better efficiency and regulation in the presence of variable load current and supply voltages. For many applications, the extremely low quiescent current allows the LT6656 to remain in an always-on, stable state. Building on Linear Technology's extensive family of precision voltage references, the LT6656 is optimized for battery-powered operation. This high performance bipolar device can withstand reverse battery conditions, accept input voltages up to 18V and operate from voltages as low as 3mV above the output voltage. When unpowered, the output is high impedance, avoiding loading on the rest of the circuit. The LT6656 is fully specified for operation from -40°C to 85°C, and is guaranteed functional over the temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. The LT6656 is currently in production with seven voltage options. Prices start at $1.74 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
- 100W to 150W Medical & ITE Certified Power Supplies
TDK-LAMBDA HAS unveiled its latest addition to its line of AC-DC medical and ITE (Information Technology Equipment) power supplies. The new single-output CSS150 series are 100 to 150-watt supplies that accept a wide AC input range, have a low profile of only 1.3" and a compact footprint of 3" × 5", making them an ideal choice for applications in non-patient contact medical/dental, light industrial, business, gaming, point-of-sale and instrumentation equipment, to name a few. These new open-frame supplies feature a universal 90-264Vac, 47-440Hz input, enabling them to be used anywhere in the world. Plus, they can operate from a 120-180Vdc input. These supplies feature a low leakage current of less than 250µA at 264Vac, 63Hz, which is important for many non-patient contact medical and dental applications. In addition, the CSS150 is designed to withstand 4kVac, input-to-output. The series are available with an output voltage of 12V, 15V, 36V, or 48Vdc, all of which have a +/-3% adjustment range. With convection cooling, these supplies provide up to 100-watts of output power. For higher power applications, with forced air cooling of 2.5 m/s, the output power increases to 150-watts. The operating temperature range is from 0°C to +70°C and the output is floating so it can be used as either a positive or negative polarity. Remote on/off connections are provided to allow for remote control of the supply. The off-load power draw is less than 0.5-watt to comply with many energy-saving initiatives. Operating efficiency is typically 89%. Other standard features include overvoltage and overcurrent protections. The input and output connections mate with standard Molex connectors. - High Power Molded Inductor
BI TECHNOLOGIES has developed a new surface mount power inductor. Designated the HM72B Series, the highly efficient, compact inductor measures just 6.8mm × 7.23mm, with a maximum board height of 3.0mm, and is designed for use in harsh environments. Specific applications for the RoHS-compliant molded power inductor include servers, notebooks, work stations, DC/DC converters, point-of-load modules, telecom and datacom equipment, and LED lighting drivers. Typical inductance values for the HM72B surface mount power inductor range from 0.10µH to 33 H. Heating current ranges from 1.8Adc to 26.2Adc, and saturation levels range from 3.5Adc to 60Adc. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +155°C, with a maximum temperature rise rating of 50°C. Typical DC resistance ranges from 1.5mΩ to 302mΩ. The HM72B inductors are available in 2000-piece tape and reel packages. Custom devices are also available.
- Subminiature Detect Switch with Reliable Contact Design
C&K COMPONENTS has developed a new series of through-hole subminiature detect switches. Available with pretravel and overtravel, the KM1202 features a highly reliable contact design with a minimum electrical life of 10,000 actuations at full load. The KM Series detect switches are available with gold- or silver-plated contacts. Maximum contact rating for the gold-plated switches is 0.4A @ 20V AC or DC, while the silver-plated devices feature a contact rating of 0.25A @ 125V AC or DC. Maximum contact resistance is 30 mΩ @ 2 to 4V DC for both the silver- and gold-plated contacts, and minimum dielectric strength is 1,000Vrms. Operating temperature ranges from -30°C and +85°C. The RoHS compliant and compatible KM Series detect switches feature a pretravel measurement of 4.06mm. Total travel is 5.84mm. - High Efficiency 4-A Switch Buck-Boost Converter
TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Incorporated introduced reportedly the industry's smallest and highest performance buck-boost converter with a 4-A switch and up to 96 percent efficiency. The TPS63020 power management integrated circuit (IC) helps extend battery life in smartphones, portable medical equipment, DLP® pico projectors and other battery-powered multimedia devices. The buck-boost device operates with a wide input voltage range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V and can discharge lithium batteries down to 2.5 V or lower, while maintaining excellent light load efficiency. The single-inductor, 2.4-MHz TPS63020 converter comes in a 3-mm × 4-mm × 1-mm package, and can achieve a complete DC/DC converter solution of 100 mm2, more than 60 percent smaller than the competition. The TPS63020 converter and a 3.3-V fixed output voltage version, the TPS63021, are available in volume now from TI with a suggested resale price of $2.50 in 1,000-unit quantities.
