Microchip Technology's MCP1703 is a low-dropout regulator (LDO) ideal for applications requiring long battery run-times and high tolerance for input-voltage variations. The LDO is able to supply 250 mA, with 2-µA quiescent current, and an input voltage up to 16 V. The LDO also features device- and circuit-protection capabilities, such as overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown. Additionally, with highly accurate output-voltage regulation, including ±2% overtemperature accuracy, the MCP1703 helps to ensure smooth, reliable system operation. The device is available in a 3-pin SOT-223 package for $0.49 each in 10,000-unit quantities. It is also available in 3-pin SOT-89 and SOT-23A packages, both for $0.43 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
Dual-Phase PWM Controllers
International Rectifier's IR3622MPbF and IR3622AMPbF are dual-channel synchronous-buck control ICs with integrated high-performance drivers for medium- to high-current POL buck converters. The IR3622 family is well suited to multirail applications that require sophisticated power-up and power-down tracking, and sequencing of multiple rails.
The devices feature a programmable switching frequency up to 600 kHz. They also can be configured to support a single-output in current-share mode, capable of delivering up to 80 A, or to support two independent outputs. The IR3622MPbF targets 12-V single-input applications, while the IR3622AMPbF can support both 5-V and 12-V applications. The MAXQ3100 is designed for applications that require an RTC and an LCD controller; it includes a digitally trimmable RTC with a dedicated backup-battery pin, an LCD interface that supports up to 160 segments, a frequency-locked loop, two analog comparators and a digital temperature sensor.
The microcontroller has 16 kbytes of EEPROM program memory and 1 kbyte of data SRAM. The display controller supports LCDs with 160 segments. The MAXQ3100 is available in an 80-pin MQFP. Unit pricing starts at $3.19 for 1000 pieces.

Low-Voltage Boost Converter
Austriamicrosystems' AS1326 is a synchronous boost converter that operates at up to 96% efficiency from a voltage between 0.7 V and 5 V. The converter delivers 620 mA at 5 V from two AA cells or 470 mA at 3.3 V from a single AA cell. It also can provide adjustable output voltages in the range of 2.5 V to 5 V, or fixed at 3.3 V, while offering adjustable soft-start and current limit.
The 1-MHz constant-frequency switching can be synchronized to an external clock between 500 kHz and 1.2 MHz. The device is available in a 3-mm × 3-mm × 0.8-mm, 10-pin TDFN package.
MTECH announces a family of air-cooled programmable power loads for testing advanced power systems. The PRL-150K 150-kW power load consists of 150 1-kW resistors mounted in a rectangular array (power-resistor block), which can accommodate several series/parallel combinations with minimum added inductance.
The resistors are mounted on a rigid frame with front and back access to resistor terminals. Interconnections are made manually by attaching standard bus bars. Each bus bar can carry up to 300 A. The load can be configured with individual resistors ranging from 0.25 Ω to 10 Ω. A variety of power levels is available. The load can be interfaced to several power cables (4/O is standard). The loads are also available in smaller arrays, such as 4 × 4 and 5 × 5.

Nichicon has extended the range of its low-profile F72 tantalum capacitor to include 1500-µF and 2200-µF, 6.3-V rated, 2-mm profile parts suitable for PCMCIA cards. The Prodigy motion control cards from Performance Motion Devices provide real-time, high-speed servo trace capture with 40 kbytes of onboard dual-port memory. Four motion variables can be stored at the same time. Each variable can be either 16 bits or 32 bits. Twenty-eight separate parameters can be selected for trace, such as position and velocity.
