  • Photo-Flash and LED-Backlight Driver ICs

OPERABLE VIA an input-voltage range from 2.7 to 5.5 V, the AAT3176 flash driver IC and AAT3351 white LED driver IC from Advanced Analogic Technologies are designed to extend battery life and reduce product footprint in cell phones. Available in a 2.2 × 2.2-mm, 10-pin TDFN package, the AAT3176 is said to be 20% smaller than comparable devices and supplies up to 500 mA output current. The dual-mode charge pump maximizes power efficiency by supporting both 1X and 2X operation and is programmable across 16 distinct steps via the company's patented S2Cwire (Simple Serial Control) interface. The photo-flash driver IC uses separate external resistors to set maximum flash and movie-mode current. A thermal-management system offers open- and short-circuit protection and automatic soft-start circuitry, while a load-disconnect feature extends battery life by disconnecting the load during shutdown and reducing quiescent current to less than 1.0 µA.

Available either in a 14-pin TSOPJW or 12-pin TDFN33 package, the AAT3351 is a high-efficiency charge pump capable of driving up to four 30-mA white LEDs. The dual-mode fractional charge pump automatically switches between 1X and 1.5X modes based on input voltage, LED forward voltage and load current to maximize efficiency. A 1-MHz switching frequency helps minimize external component size. Both ICs are qualified across the -40° C to 85°C temperature range. The AAT3176 is priced at $0.66 each while the AAT3351 is priced at $0.48 each in 1,000-piece quantities.

  • Arbitrary Noise Generator

THE 81150A pulse-function arbitrary noise generator from Agilent Technologies features a new pattern generator that, according to the company, represents the industry's first instrument able to test analog, digital and mixed-signal devices. The 81150A suits general-purpose bench tests as it is integrated in one instrument, providing a smaller footprint and reduced test time, and improving productivity for manufacturers of computer and communication devices. Simplification of key R&D tasks is critical to speed up design cycles. The Agilent 81150A is designed for the best signal generation to simplify debugging, characterization or compliance tests, whether it is applied for sinusoidal jitter or a distorted PRBS.

Agilent's new pattern generator also supports the new bus standards, such as Flexray, with three level signals, initialization sequences and long patterns. The distortion capabilities of the pattern allow simulation of worst-case situations and provide a new class of tests. The pattern generator supports each development phase for sine waves up to 240 MHz, pulses up to 120 MHz, 14-bit and 2-GSa/s arbitrary waveforms, and PRBS up to 231. The Agilent 81150A pattern generator is available now. Pricing starts at $3,990.

  • 2-MHz Synchronous DC-DC Converters

DELIVERING AN output up to 4 A and 6 A, respectively, the MAX15038/MAX15039 synchronous dc-dc converters from Maxim Integrated Products operate at switching frequencies from 500 kHz to 2 MHz, enabling compact, all-ceramic-capacitor designs. User-selectable, fixed-frequency PWM, and pulse-skipping modes ensure high efficiency during light loads, while integrated low-resistance MOSFETs maximize conversion efficiency at heavy loads. The MAX15038/MAX15039 converters deliver a conversion efficiency of over 94% at 1 MHz to suit a variety of point-of-load applications such as those found in telecom, networking, storage, and server equipment.

The dc-dc converters integrate a high-bandwidth (28-MHz) voltage-error amplifier that can be combined with a voltage-mode control architecture to enable the implementation of type III compensation. This topology maximizes bandwidth, improves transient response, and minimizes output capacitance, thus allowing an all-ceramic-capacitor design. The devices operate from a 2.9-V to 5.5-V supply, and provide ±1% output-voltage accuracy over line, load, and temperature variations. Other features include two 3-state inputs to select one of nine preset outputs, an external reference input for tracking applications, programmable soft-start, and the ability to sink and source current at the output for memory applications. Additionally, the output voltage can be adjusted to any customer value with two external resistors. Available in a 4- × 4-mm TQFN package, the dc-dc converters operate in temperatures from -40°C to 85°C. Prices start at $2.73 in quantities of 1,000.

  • 20-V Power MOSFETs

THE SI7615DN TrenchFET Gen III 20-V p-channel power MOSFET from Vishay Intertechnology achieves ultra-low on-resistance — 3.9 mΩ at 10 V, 5.5 mΩ at 4.5 V, and 9.8 mΩ — that translates into lower conduction losses to enable the device to perform switching tasks with, according to the company, less power than any previous p-channel power MOSFET on the market. In addition, the MOSFET's 3.3- x 3.3-mm footprint requires one-third the PC-board space of the PowerPAK SO-8 or other SO-8-type packages.

The company also states the MOSFET represents the lowest on-resistance ever achieved in the PowerPAK 1212-8-type package. The Si7615DN will be used as the adapter switch, as well as for load-switching applications in notebook computers, netbooks, and industrial/general systems. Adapter switches (switching between the adaptor/wall power or battery power) are always on and drawing current.

The Si7615DN joins the company's recently released 20-V p-channel TrenchFET Gen III Si7137DP in the PowerPAK SO-8 package. To meet the needs of individual applications, the p-channel TrenchFET Gen III packaging options offer designers a choice between the maximum drain current and power dissipation of the PowerPAK SO-8 (60 % and 75 % higher, respectively, than the SO-8) or the space savings provided by the PowerPAK 1212-8. The device is 100 % Rg-tested and halogen-free.

Samples and production quantities of the new Si7615DN TrenchFET power MOSFET are available now, with lead times of 10 to 12 weeks for larger orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery in 100,000-piece quantities starts at $0.44.

  • Connectors

BLOCKMASTER ELECTRONICS CGF series of female connectors is designed to eliminate unintentional contact between PCB elements. With contacts of the CGF series soldered directly to the PC board, they become inaccessible except through the use of a mating male connector or the intended circuit wire, thus acting as a safety feature to prevent accidental contact.

Available in 5-mm, 7.5-mm or 10-mm pitches in side-stackable or modular versions in 2 to 25 positions, the connectors feature voltage ratings are from 250 V to 750 V at 15 A, depending on connector pitch, and accept wire sizes of from 12 AWG to 30 AWG. Operating temperature range is from -40°C to +110°C with housing material of PA 6.6 Polyamide in a standard green color.

Further safety considerations include mating coding splines and clips. BlockMaster's new CGF Series connectors are CE and RU approved.

CE- and RU-approved, the connectors are available from stock for prototype quantities, with production requirements currently at a 6 to 8 weeks delivery ARO. Pricing for a three-position unit at a pitch of 5.0-mm in lots of 500 pieces is quoted at $0.35 per pole.
