DC-DC Converter for PoE
Power Integrations has expanded its DPA-Switch family of ICs, introducing a low-profile option for the power over Ethernet (PoE) market and other high-voltage dc-dc applications. The S-PAK package gives a footprint savings of 40% and a height reduction of 55% compared to the existing TO-263 package, while offering equivalent thermal impedance.
DPA-Switch ICs integrate most of a dc-dc converter onto a monolithic chip, providing a scaleable solution for applications up to 100 W. This scalability allows DPA-Switch parts to address all current PoE classes (classes 0 to 3), as well as future higher-power PoE-Plus standards.
DPA423SN, for applications with maximum power output of 18 W, is optimized for class 1 and class 2 PoE applications, while DPA424SN (35 W maximum power) is optimized for class 0 and class 3 applications.
Pricing in 1000-piece quantities ranges from $1.36 each for the DPA423SN, an 18-W part, to $2.66 for the 100-W rated DPA426SN.

Powerex HVICs are highvoltage, high-speed integrated circuits used for driving MOSFETs and IGBTs. The devices use a proprietary BiCMOS junction isolation design to provide robust level shifting and floating drive circuits at both 600 V and 1200 V. Offered in a variety of lead-free industry standard surface-mount packages, these circuits are available in half-bridge, three-phase and floating high-side configurations with an output current up to 2 A. Sample quantities are available at a cost range of $1 to $4 depending upon rating.
PowerDsine's 3012 is a 12-port PoE midspan designed for the small-medium enterprise (SME) market, where WLAN adoption is increasing. The 3012 PoE Midspan connects between Ethernet switches and powered devices, such as WLAN access points, VoIP phones and network security cameras, to allow a simple and cost-effective way for SMEs to deploy lower-density installations of these terminals.
Compliant with IEEE 802.3af, the 3012 supports prestandard terminals as well as legacy Ethernet switches. Available now, the 3012 is priced at $519 per unit.
Front-End Power Supply
From Wall Industries, the PSAQC60 series of board-mounted dual-front-end power supplies are designed for worldwide use in applications that are subject to dirt, dust, moisture and other harsh environments. These power supplies accept input ranges of either 90 Vac to 264 Vac or 120 Vdc to 370 Vdc. They deliver up to 60 W in single dc outputs of 5 V, 12 V, 15 V or 24 V.
The PSAQC60 series is housed in a 4.25-in. × 2.24-in. × 1.42-in. package. Other features include UL/cUL, TUV, CE and CB approvals, efficiencies up to 80%, wide standard operating temperature of -25°C to 70°C, no minimum load requirements, line/load regulation of ±1%, voltage accuracy of ±2%, short-circuit protection and overpower protection with autorecovery. The PSAQC60 series is priced at $45 in OEM quantities.
Fast-Recovery Epitaxial Diodes
After exhaustive reliability testing, Advanced Power Technology has confirmed that both its D and DQ family of fast-recovery epitaxial diodes (FREDs) can be reliably operated up to 175°C junction temperature. The higher temperature rating provides improved temperature margin and reliability at a given power level and increased RMS current capability at elevated junction temperatures.
These devices also offer low leakage and platinum doping and are available in RoHS-compliant form. These FREDs are designed for use in switch-mode power supplies, alternative energy inverters, motor drives and other industrial applications. The diodes can be used as snubber diodes, hard-switched PFC boost diodes and free-wheeling diodes.
Advanced Power Technology
From Raychem Circuit Protection, a business unit of Tyco Electronics, the PolySwitch TSM600-400 is a low-resistance, resettable overcurrent protection device for communications infrastructure applications. This RoHS-compliant device helps equipment comply with recent telecom standards and can also be used in systems designed to ITU-T K.21 and K.21 recommendations.
With its surface-mount configuration, small footprint and low resistance, the PolySwitch TSM600-400 device is designed for use in high-density multiport linecards and other space-constrained communications network equipment. Each of the two resettable overcurrent protection components in the device has a typical resistance of 1.2 Ω, and the two components are typically matched to better than 0.3 Ω. TSM600-400 costs $1 in quantities of 100,000 units.

Video Power Supplies
Honeywell Power Products' line of surge-protected video power supplies are designed to power either stationary or PTZ cameras and are available in indoor as well as NEMA 4X IP66-rated weatherproof enclosures. Power output is 24 Vac for standard applications and 28 Vac for long cable runs prone to voltage sag. This product line is ideal for applications where damaging power surges, spikes or transients are likely to occur in camera and control circuits.
The HPTV2801S includes a HCPS surge module that provides power- and video-surge protection for stationary cameras. The indoor Surge Protection Video Power Supplies feature a vented enclosure with a hinged door, five convenient knockouts, built-in thermal protection and an ac line cord. Weatherproof versions of these supplies have a “WP” suffix to signify the enhanced enclosure.
Honeywell Power Products
Bodine Electric's U-shaped gearmotors are built-to-order for OEM applications. The type -HG gearhead provides flexible mounting and high torque in a small package.
The type -HG gearmotors are available with Bodine's 42R ac induction, 33A permanent magnet dc and 34B brushless dc motors. This gearmotor design utilizes three stages of gearing, providing gear ratios from 6-to-1 to 110-to-1. The gearmotor produces up to 1000 lb-in. continuous torque and outputs from 3 rpm to 23 rpm. For increased radial load capacity and long life, the HG gearheads are unvented with needle bearings for the intermediate gear stages and large ball bearings on the output shaft.
Martek Power's 1000XFR series of fully isolated dc-dc converters deliver 10 W of single output in a 1.25-in. × 0.8-in. × 0.4-in. package. That translates to a power density of 25 W/in3. The converters feature a 2-to-1 input-voltage range centered around 24 V or 48 V and offer output voltage options of 2.5 V, 3.3 V, 5 V or 12 V. Operating efficiency is as high as 87%.
Other features include an MTBF of 1 million hours and compliance with EN55022 Class A requirements. These converters also offer a -40°C to 60°C operating temperature range, 1500 Vdc isolation and short-circuit protection. The 1000XFR are priced at $28 each in volume.
