Ultrafast Rectifiers Improve Power Density and Thermal Performance
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduced 13 new 200 V and 600 V FRED Pt Ultrafast recovery rectifiers in the eSMP series SlimDPAK (TO-252AE) package, each available in Automotive Grade and commercial / industrial versions. Offering lower profiles and better thermal performance than devices in the DPAK (TO-252AA), the Vishay Semiconductors rectifiers deliver high power density and efficiency for automotive and telecom applications.
The devices released today combine a low 1.3 mm profile with high forward current ratings to 10 A for 200 V rectifiers and 15 A for 600 V rectifiers. Footprint-compatible with the DPAK package, the devices' profile is 43 % lower to enable slimmer end products, while their heatsink area is 14 % larger for lower thermal resistance. In addition, new 15 A rectifiers provide an alternative to devices in the D2PAK (TO-263AB) package.
Thermoelectric Assemblies Offer Compact Cooling Performance
Laird has expanded its thermoelectric assembly (TEA) product offering to include a higher capacity range for critical medical equipment. Previously, the Tunnel Series TEAs offered cooling for capacities up to 39 watts. The new boosted Tunnel Series now offers cooling capacities exceeding 100 Watts to support a wider range of cooling applications. Available in standard and custom configurations, the boosted Tunnel Series thermoelectric assemblies offer a compact form factor that fits inside analytical and medical instrumentation with tight space constraints.
First Radiation-Hardened Quad Power Supply Sequencers
Intersil announced the ISL70321SEH and ISL73321SEH quad power supply sequencers designed to drive point-of load (POL) regulators that power high performance FPGAs and complex, multi-rail power systems. Highly scalable, up to four power supplies can be fully sequenced by a single device or multiple devices can be easily cascaded to sequence an unlimited number of power supplies. Intersil's radiation-hardened power supply sequencers ensure high reliability operation with fault monitoring to boost system health and performance, and they are the industry's first space-grade sequencers backed by single event effects (SEE) mitigation tests and complete radiation assurance testing.
The ISL70321SEH sequencer is radiation assurance tested to 100krad(Si) at high dose rate and 75krad(Si) at low dose rate, while the ISL73321SEH is assurance tested to 75krad(Si) at low dose rate. Both sequencers provide an accurate and scalable method to achieve the proper power-up and power-down sequencing of DC/DC converters essential to powering FPGAs, DSPs, RF communications ICs, and high density distributed power systems. They simplify design by using minimal external components, only requiring two resistors per power supply for voltage monitoring, and a single resistor to program the rising and falling delay.
Tantalum Nitride Precision Chip Resistors Add 10 ppm TCR Capability
Stackpole's AEC qualified RTAN series utilizes tantalum nitride technology to provide moisture proof precision chip resistor performance. The RTAN film passes biased humidity testing at 85 degrees C, 85% relative humidity, and 10% bias with very little shift in resistance. The materials and design are such that the RTAN is resistant to sulfur contamination and will pass the industry standard sulfur test ANSI/EIA-977 (Method A) with minimal resistance shift. Stackpole has now expanded the available tolerances to include 0.05%, and TCR options now include 10 ppm per degree C.
This expansion enables the use of the RTAN for a wider variety of precision application requirements. Those applications include instrumentation, aerospace, test equipment, industrial controls, portable communications diagnostic equipment, and portable medical devices.
Pricing for the RTAN depends on size and tolerance, but ranges from $0.15 to $0.65 in full reel quantities.
Shield Gate Technology MOSFET High-Density Power Supply Solutions
Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited announced the release of AONS66916 production utilizing the latest Alpha Shield Gate Technology Generation 2 (AlphaSGT2). The AONS66916 has best-in-class RDS(ON × Qg (FOM) and more robust capability for a greater safety margin. In synchronous rectification, it is essential to optimize the reverse recovery charge and reduce the voltage overshoot. These attributes enable higher efficiency and robustness to critical high density telecom and server applications.
The AlphaSGT2 provides ~30% lower RDS(ON) compared to AlphaSGT1 and is designed to be more robust with significant avalanche energy improvement. AlphaSGT2 technology reduces both conduction and switching losses. Thus, with AlphaSGT2 technology, circuit designers can prevent paralleling devices for lower turn-on resistance, enabling higher power density in power supply applications.
Active Rectifier Controller with Reverse Protection
Analog Devices announces the Power by Linear LT8672, an active rectifier controller with reverse input protection to –40V. Its 3V to 42V input voltage capability is ideal for automotive applications which must regulate through cold-crank and stop-start scenarios with minimum input voltages as low as 3.0V and load dump transients up to 40V.
The LT8672 drives an external N-channel MOSFET, offering a 20mV drop, reducing power dissipation by 90% compared to a Schottky diode, eliminating requirements for a costly heat sink. The ultrafast transient response enables it to meet stringent automotive applications requiring AC input ripple rectification up to 100kHz. Its 20µA quiescent current while operating and 3.5µA in shutdown are ideal for always-on systems.
Low Capacitance TVS Diode Array
Littelfuse, Inc. introduced a new series of small-footprint TVS Diode Arrays (SPA Diodes) that are optimized for protecting high-speed signal pins. The SP3422-04UTG Series 0.2pF 22kV TVS Diode Array integrates four channels of ultra-low capacitance rail-to-rail diodes and an additional zener diode to provide protection for electronic equipment that may be exposed to destructive electrostatic discharges (ESD). This robust component can safely absorb repetitive ESD strikes above the maximum level specified in the IEC 61000-4-2 international standard without performance degradation.
Ultra-Compact Ultra-Powerful LED Driver
Seoul Semiconductor has developed an ultra-compact LED driver series with a power density five times higher than conventional LED drivers. Based on Seoul Semiconductor's patented Acrich technology, the MicroDriver Series delivers more than 24W of output power with a power density of 20W/cubic inch cubic inch, compared to existing drivers at 3-5W/cubic inch. Measuring just 1.5" x 1.1" x 0.8" (38mm x 28mm x 20.5mm), the MicroDriver is 80% smaller than conventional LED drivers, giving lighting designers the ability to develop ultra-thin and novel luminaires with flicker-free operation.
15 W and 20 W DC-DC Converters for Medical Applications
Artesyn Embedded Technologies announced the AEE15W-M and AEE20W-M series, new 15 and 20 watt dc-dc converters that provide OEMs with an economical solution for demanding applications in industrial and medical instrumentation requiring a certified supplementary or reinforced insulation system to comply with industrial or medical safety standards.
The reinforced insulation system, critical for medical equipment applications, is rated for 300 Vac working voltage and 4200 Vac RMS input/output isolation. The new dc-dc modules are certified to the 3rd Edition UL/CSA/EN/IEC 60601-1 medical safety standard and are rated for 2X means of patient protection (MOPP). This highly reliable family has a calculated MTBF of greater than one million hours.
1000W and 1500W Power Supplies Receive Medical Safety Certifications
TDK Corporation announces the introduction of the RWS1000B and RWS1500B "ME" medical AC-DC power supplies designed to provide solid performance at an economical price. In addition to the industrial models, the RWS-B series now includes 1000W and 1500W power levels certified to the medical IEC 60601-1 standard. The 7-year warranty RWS-B series is ideally suited for medical, cosmetic laser treatment and analysis equipment requiring less than 300µA earth leakage current.
The 1000W and 1500W additions are available with 12, 15, 24, 36 and 48V outputs, adjustable up to -15/+15% of nominal. All models accept an 85 to 265Vac input and can operate at full load in -20 to +50oC ambient temperatures, derating linearly to 60% load from +50oC to +60oC. High operating efficiencies of up to 88% reduce internal waste heat and component temperatures, resulting in electrolytic capacitor service life predictions of at least ten years.
